Step 1: Select and prepare your materials

Choose an artificial flower with a bendable wired stem. Use the size of your flip flop to judge the size of the flower head. (A bigger shoe size can accommodate a bigger flower head.)

Select a type of flower that lays flat, such as a zinnia or mum. Stiff, poufy flowers such as roses may not stay on the shoe well, but flatter styles stay in place nicely.

Remove tags from the flip flops and flowers. Then, use wire cutters to trim the flower stems so that they are only about 3 inches long.

Step 2: Attach the flower

Cut a strip of floral tape approximately 18 inches long. Begin to wrap it around the lower base and upper stem of the flower.

Position the flower stem along the upper outside of the sandal strap (see photo above). Continue to wrap the floral tape around both the flower stem and the sandal strap until the entire stem is smoothly covered.

Floral tape is sticky, so press it into place. Do not skimp on floral tape, as this fastens the flower to the sandal. The flower should be securely fastened at this point.

Needed For This Project

Glue Dots Craft Roll, Contains 200 ( .5 Inch) Adhesive Craft Dots (08165)

These glue dots adhere beautifully and don't cause a mess. Don't even try another type of adhesive with this project. This is what you need!

Use Big Flowers To Hide Ugly Toes

You may wish to go with smaller flowers if you are blessed with fancy feet. The good thing about making your own shoes is you get to customize them!

Step 3: Wrap decorative ribbon around straps

Cut a piece of decorative ribbon approximately 30 inches long. Place glue dots on the outside of the sandal strap. Secure the end of the ribbon using a glue dot, then wind the ribbon around the sandal strap.

Overlap the ribbon rather generously, and use the glue dots to secure the ribbon at regular intervals. (I prefer glue dots to hot glue because they are less hazardous to work with and hold just as well.)

When you come to the middle section, wrap the decorative ribbon around the opposite sandal strap and continue until you reach the sandal base (see photo above).

To finish, simply use a glue dot to firmly secure the ribbon on the outside of the sandal strap.

Step 4: Bend, fluff, and wear

Bend and fluff the wired flower so that it sits properly on the sandal strap. Now, your work of art is ready to show off!

These flip-flops are so cute. I often wear them instead of slippers. I like the idea of jazzing them up a bit!

Crafty - Glad you liked this. This is definitely the time of year to stock up. They are easy to make, and floral tape is much superior to hot glue (doesn't melt the plastic and much safer!). Thanks for reading and commenting.

Oh wow, that is neat! I never thought to use floral tape for a project like this. My daughter would love this. She just now started wearing headbands with flowers on them to school because it's the in thing around here. I should tell her how to make this. She would get a big kick out of making herself a pair. We went to Kohls recently and they had all of their flips marked down to $1 and $2, too bad I didn't grab a couple of extras.

Even the cool chart with the breakdown of costs! That's helpful, and that's what I call ORGANIZED.

This is such a wonderful idea, I am going to try this! I had a pair of coach flip flops with flowers on them, they were very expensive and very uncomfortable. I love the fact that with this tutorial I can make my own, that way I can use comfy shoes that won't hurt my feet :)
