How to Create Beautiful Dreamy Text in Photoshop

Updated on December 12, 2015

In this short tutorial I am going to show you how to create colorful Dreamy Text in only sixteen steps. All you need to achieve the final result is Brush Script Std default Font and Layer Styles. The subtle sandy effect is created with the help of Inner Glow and increased Noise option. The slight 3D Effect is a result of Bevel and Emboss use and nudging of the bottom Text layer.

The tutorial is suitable for beginners and all Photoshop versions are applicable.

This is the final result:

STEP 1

Firstly create a new .psd document (File, New). Name your new file Dreamy Text, set its Width to 1300px and Height to 700px. Set the Resolution to 96 Pixels/Inch, select RGB for Color Mode and Transparent for Background Contents.

Double click on Layer 1 name and write Background in the white space to rename the layer.

STEP 2

Click on Set Foreground Color swatch in the Tools bar and change the Foreground Color to #093f3c. Grab Paint Bucket tool and drag once with it on the canvas to colorize it.

Type the Text, Duplicate its Layer and Nudge it

In the next five steps you have firstly to type your Text then duplicate its layer and nudge the copied one. After that you’ll have to make another copy of the first duplicated Text layer.

In Steps 5-7 you should add Shadow and dark Gradient to the original Text layer to give it volume and color.

STEP 3

Take Horizontal Type tool from the Tools bar (or press T). Click on the Font Family drop down menu and select Brush Script Std default Font then Set its Font Size to 75pt. Select #fdfa9b for Text Color. Type Dream in capital letters then highlight the Text. Now click on Toggle the Character and Paragraph Panels icon in your Options bar and Set the Tracking for the Selected Characters to 70.

With Dream Text layer selected go to Layer, Group Layers (Ctrl+G) to place the layer in a Group. Rename the new Group 1 to Text.

STEP 4

While Dream Text layer is highlighted press once Ctrl+J in order to create duplicate of the layer. Important: select Dream copy layer, select also Move tool then press five times Upper Arrow key and 1 time Left Arrow key to nudge the layer. Now press Ctrl+J while Dream copy layer is selected to get a new duplicate- Dream copy 2 layer. Leave Fill Opacity of Dream copy layer to 100% and reduce Fill of Dream copy 2 layer to 0%.

STEP 5

Go back to the original Dream Text layer, right click on it and select Blending Options (Layer, Layer Style, Blending Options). Firstly tick Drop Shadow Layer style and change two of its settings: increase Spread to 40% and Size to 18px.

Keep Layer Style box active as we are going to add two more Blending Options.

STEP 6

The second Layer Style to be applied on Dream Text layer is Inner Shadow. Modify two of its settings: change Distance to 2px and Size to 4px.

STEP 7

We have one last Layer Style to apply on Dream Text layer. Now tick Stroke and change its settings like this:

Size: 4px

Position: Outside

Blend Mode: Normal

Opacity: 100%

Fill Type: Gradient

Click to Edit the Gradient like this:

First Color Stop (Location 0%): #332e04

Second Color Stop (Location 100%): #726d15

Reverse: not checked

Style: Reflected

Align with Layer: checked

Angle: 90 degrees

Dither: not checked

Scale: 100%.

Now press OK button to apply the three Blending Options and to close Layer Style box.

This should be your outcome after adding the previous layer styles on the original Text layer:

Apply Blending Options on Both Duplicated Text Layers

In Steps 8-15 you have to create two beautiful Gradients of vivid colors to make your Dreamy Text more attractive, and also add Glow, Shadow and 3D Effect to both duplicates. Inner Glow Layer Style with increased Noise will create awesome sandy texture effect.

STEP 8

Now select Dream copy layer and firstly give it the following Gradient Overlay:

Blend Mode: Normal

Dither: unchecked

Opacity: 100%

Click to Edit the Gradient like this:

First Color Stop (Location 0%): #f6f318

Second Color Stop (Location 30%): #15616f

Thirth Color Stop (Location 60%): #c35039

Fourth Color Stop (Location 100%): #700074

Reverse: unchecked

Style: Linear type of gradient

Align with Layer: checked

Angle: 90 degrees

Scale: 100%.

Leave Layer Style box open as more layer styles have to be added to Dream copy layer.

Opacity: 30%.

STEP 12

The last Layer Style to be added to Dream copy layer is this Contour:

Contour: Gaussian

Anti-aliased: not checked

Range: 40%.

Compare my screenshot with the result on your canvas:

Below is shown an example how your Dreamy Text will look after adding Blending Options to the first duplicated layer:

STEP 13

Now select Dream copy 2 layer and firstly apply on it the following Gradient Overlay:

Blend Mode: Overlay

Dither: unchecked

Opacity: 100%

Click to Edit the Gradient like this:

First Color Stop (Location 0%): #cc29c6

STEP 14

Add also this Inner Glow Layer Style to Dream copy 2 layer:

Blend Mode: Overlay

Opacity: 60%

Noise: 100%

Color of Glow: #73f9b5

Technique: Softer

Source: Center

Choke: 0%

Size: 24px

Contour: Cone-Inverted

Anti-aliased: unchecked

Range: 50%.

Jitter: 0%.

Now you can press OK button and close Layer Style dialog box.

STEP 15

Our Colorful Dreamy Text is ready. You should have in your Layers panel one separate Background layer and one Text Group which includes Dream, Dream copy and Dream copy 2 layer.

STEP 16

This is my Dreamy Text Effect saved in .jpg format. I improved the quality of my .jpg file with the help of High Pass Filter. For the purpose, open your Dreamy Text .jpg file in Photoshop, duplicate the Background layer and go to Filter, Other, High Pass. Set the Radius to 10px and press OK. After that change the Blend Mode of the duplicated layer to Soft Light and reduce its Opacity to about 70-75%. Flatten the image when you are ready.

The other way to sharpen your .jpg file is to use Filter, Sharpen, Unsharp Mask. I prefer to set its Amount option to 50% and leave its Radius to 1 Pixel and Threshold to 0 Levels. The advantage of this method is that you don’t need to duplicate the background layer. Simply open the .jpg file in Photoshop and apply the Unsharp Mask Filter.

Hope you liked this short and easy tutorial and found the effect useful.

Thank you very much for reading and God bless! :)
