Forget Diamonds, Buttons are this Girl's Best Friend

I always love items that are both fashionable and functional-- like the button. Buttons are cute and anyone who disagrees can contend with the saying, "Cute as a button!" I have been known to buy a sweater or dress moments after falling in love with the buttons. There is something so simple and homey about buttons. Growing up, my mother always had a button box and I loved to look at the buttons inside like they were delicate treasures. There were big buttons, buttons that weren't round, and buttons that were older than me. Making a button vase is a great way to turn your button collection into a piece of everyday art. I made a lovely button vase for under $8.00 and a button jar for under $5.00.

Finding a Vase

You can make a button vase using almost anything. It doesn't have to be a vase, so don't automatically discount the idea of using something comparable just because it isn't a vase per se. I found a cute little vase from Goodwill for 60 cents.

Get inspired

  • mason jar
  • can
  • pitcher
  • carafe
  • Coke bottle
  • watering pail
  • canister
  • wine bottle

Places to find vases:

  • garage sale
  • craft store
  • freecycle.org
  • thrift store
  • antique store
  • Etsy
  • Facebook. Post that you need a vase for a craft project and see if anyone has an extra one under their kitchen sink that they don't use. My mom usually has tons because she gets a vase of flowers as a gift a few times a year.

Where Can I Buy a Lot of Buttons?

Buttons are easy to find. You can buy them locally from a craft or sewing store, but I've found the best prices and variety are available online. Using the website Etsy, you can easily browse through hundreds of listings of buttons for sale. If you need fifty or one hundred-- simply type that in your search. Same goes for color. If you're looking for 100 pastel buttons, don't be surprised when that listing exists. Etsy is such a great tool for buying items like this. Other listings are for vintage button collections, years in the making, just waiting to be bought and turned into something great. The prices that Etsy sellers are asking are usually very reasonable too. I purchased 100 hand-dyed buttons in teal, aqua, yellow, orange, and green for $6.50 from Little Red Cottage. It was quite a fantastic little button collection and I'm glad I found it for my button vase.

How Do You Make a Button Vase?

Instructions

  1. Wash your vase inside and out and allow to dry completely. You want to make sure your buttons and glue have a clean and dry surface to adhere to.
  2. Glue buttons on vase using a hot glue gun. This seems pretty simple because it is.

Button Vase Tips

Putting the glue on the button or on the vase will get the job done.

  • But-- If you don't want hot glue to ooze through the holes, simply line the back of the button with the nozzle of your hot glue gun and go around the buttonholes, avoiding them.
  • Feed string, cording, or twine through your button holes and tie in a knot on the backside of the button. Trim off excess. This will keep the glue from coming through and give your button and vase a totally different look.

Help! My buttons keep falling off!

  • Use more glue. If your buttons are falling off, you might not be using enough glue. This happened to me. I started using heftier dollops and now my buttons aren't going anywhere for a long time!

Look before you leap-- err GLUE!

  • Place each button in a desired spot before gluing it to make sure it fits and you'll like the way it looks.

Utilize both sides of your buttons.

  • Some buttons might look identical on both sides, but some may look like an entirely different button. If I had more than one of the same style of button, I would glue them down both ways to add more variety to my finished piece.

Scrapbook Paper Button Vase

I made a second button vase (jar) with pre-punched paper buttons and it cost even less. This is a great way to use up scraps of scrapbook paper. Watch my tutorial video to see how.

Too cool!! I was wondering what to do to display all of my pretty buttons--I always hated that they were sitting in a dark box waiting for me to be inspired...by YOU!. Voted up, beautiful, etc.

I'm glad you liked it. I love SAS. My dressmaker found the most beautiful off-white lace for my wedding dress from SAS. I wish I lived closer to that side of town-- I'd go there all the time!

Love this..Never thought of using buttons. I am amazed at how interesting the vases look. I am going to check online sources as this seems like fun. There is a store in Phoenix, Arizona called SAS and it has boxes of buttons. I think I have a new hobby. Up and shared.
