How to Make a Doodle
About Making a Doodle
Have you been online looking at some cool doodle art and curious on how to make a doodle. The first thing you need to know about making a doodle is, you do not have to be an artist or have any kind of drawing skills at all. As a matter of fact anyone can doodle. Doodling is an unconscious act of drawing. If you know how to draw a line or shape, you will have no problem at all making a doodle. Of course, you do not want to have a picture with a bunch of shapes or lines. You want your doodle to look cool, so I am going to show you the secret to making a cool looking doodle.
If you have seen different examples of doodle art, then I am sure you have noticed that some doodles are very detailed and some that are kind of sloppy. You also may have noticed that some people who doodle, are fixated on drawing a certain character or object. You will see the same character or object in all of their doodle art. If you want to make a doodle, you can simply draw a shape, or think of something that is on your mind, draw it, and add to it. There is no right way or wrong way to make a doodle. I am going to show you how to make two different kinds of doodles. The first doodle being an abstract black and white doodle starting with a line. The second will be a color doodle starting with a word, letter or character.
How to Make an Abstract Doodle Step 1
First find a pen or pencil and a piece of paper. You do not have to have any kind of special art supplies. If you have something to draw with and something to draw on, you can doodle away.
Now start off by drawing a line or shape. Let your hand move freely in the direction your mind wants it to go. Try not to think too hard, and never think of what the outcome of your doodle will look like. If you think too hard, then you are drawing a picture not doodling. Just let your hand go free.
By looking at the picture above you may notice on how it just looks like a meaningless line. When making an abstract doodle, you are going to want to add thicker lines around your first line or shape. By doing this you are making your shape or line stick out. Simply add some boldness to your line and shape. Let your hand move freely and do as you feel with your bolder line.
Continue to do the same thing. Draw lines around your lines. Draw straight lines, curved lines, scribble lines, whatever you want to do. As you continue doing this, the doodle will create it self. If you notice, there is already a face and the shape on top looks like a bird. So I am going to turn that shape into a bird.
As you can see I turned the shape on top into a bird and I filled in some of the areas with black to make it stick out.
This is where it gets fun. You can see that my doodle is already looking like a piece of art. Once it starts to look interesting, you will find yourself in a rhythm and you will keep going with the flow. Keep adding shapes and lines and your doodle will continue to create it self.
Abstract Doodle Complete
There you have it. An abstract doodle that started out as a simple line.
Making a Character Doodle
Now I am going to show you how to make a simple color, character doodle starting with a phrase. The difference between the color doodle and the abstract doodle is. The abstract doodle is when you are letting your pen or pencil roam freely without putting any thought into your doodle. The color doodle starting with a character, word or object, has a little bit more thought put into it.
How to Make a Character Doodle Step 1
When making a character doodle you just want to think of something you want to draw. Maybe it is your favorite cartoon character. You can start out by drawing a heart or flower. You can write a word or phrase. Draw the first thing that comes to your mind. As you can see I started out with the phrase, “how to doodle”. So far the doodle looks bad and nowhere close to being a piece of art. I am going to do the same thing I did with the abstract doodle by adding a border line around my phrase.
Add some borders around your character.
Continue on by adding lines and borders around your character and make some of your lines bolder. Be creative. If you noticed, I turned the letter o in doodle to eyeballs. I will continue by showing pictures on how my doodle will progress as I keep adding to it.
Step 9 Adding Color to Your Doodle
So now I have my doodle created, I am going to add some color. When adding color to your doodle. You want it to stick out and look cool so, pick some colorful colors that mix together well. Try not to add too many different colors. I would suggest a maximum of 5 or 6 different colors in your doodle. When coloring your doodle. You will want to re outline your drawing after every area you fill in with color. By re outlining each area, it will make your colors stick out better. To avoid black smudging in your colors. Color your entire doodle first, let it dry and re outline your entire doodle with a pen or marker. To make areas of your doodle or colors stick out, make some of your lines or objects bolder with thicker black lines.
Step 10 Doodle Art Complete
So there you have it my doodle is complete.
