How to draw a chair

Updated on November 1, 2012

Hi everyone! Today, you will be learning how to draw a simple dining room chair. Why would you want to learn how to draw a chair? You may need to draw one for many specific reasons. Perhaps, you are drawing a dining room or tavern scene, which would naturally consist of chairs. Who knows? It's none of my business, I'm just here to help out :D.

Keep reading this hub and you will learn how to draw a simple chair in no time!

Step 1

The lines you will be drawing in this step represent the back rest of your chair. Start out by drawing 6 horizontal lines tacked on top of one another. It doesn't have to look great, just make them look obviously like lines. You may round the lines slightly if you'd like too, as this will add to the overall look of your finished chair.

Step 2

Now, draw 1 vertical line on either side of the horizontal lines. These lines will later be used as part of the outer frame and legs of the chair.

Step 3

Draw in 2 more vertical lines right beside the other two lines like in the example. Connect the lines as shown in the drawing.

Step 4

Now that you are finished drawing the top of the chair, you can now start drawing the seat. The sear can come in various looks and can be either round or square like in appearance. In this tutorial however, the seat will have a round back and a square front.

When I drew the seat, it reminded me of the tip of someone's fingernail. Draw the seat like you would draw a rounded out fingernail.

Step 5

On to the legs! Every chair has 4 legs on it. The back two legs connect to the back rest of the chair and the two front legs connect to the seat. Study the image in step 5 to get a good idea of what I'm talking about.

Step 6

Add some dimension to your chair. Make it look more 2 dimensional by giving the leg of the chairs curves and corners. As you can see, the drawing from step 5 looks less flat and more solid just by doing this.

Step 7

After step 6, the rest is really up to you! You can add some sort of design such as a wooden appearance or some lines in to your chair if you want. This drawing is somewhat plain, but it is only intended to give you an idea of the basics to drawing a chair! That is all and I hope you enjoyed this hub! :3
