How To Draw A Cyclops

Updated on May 15, 2013

Drawing A Cyclops Fantasy Creature

A Cyclops I think I've only ever seen one in an old fantasy film called Sinbad and them types of movies inspired me to draw as a kid and so that's why we are going to go through a drawing tutorial of how to draw a Cyclops, which is a one eyed giant. There are two drawing videos that I have created that deal with drawing the Cyclops creature in pencil and this is called the drafting stage which helps to explore your sketch first and really see if the drawing is going to work.

The pencil sketching stage is the fun part as we are trying to create something worthwhile and a creature drawing on the paper is one of the finer things to try and create. So watch the first drawing video and see how you could approach the way of drawing a Cyclops.

Cyclops Creature Inking Process

Inking the Cyclops pencil drawing is the next logical step to finalize your drawing and there are certain inking techniques that you can use to apply an ink pen to the pencil lines of your drawing. A gel ink pen or a quality professional ink pen like a Sharpie may be good for larger areas and adding thicker more dense ink lines to your drawing. however always prefer the cheap gel ink pens as they are perfect for the inking stage on any drawing.

In the next video I try to attempt to explain how to ink quite fast to create a nice ink effect which looks almost spontaneous and gives an energy to your drawings. It's a technique that relies heavily on your understanding of what you are drawing and it's a borrowed method from Cartoonists who draw and sketch Cartoon characters quite fast to capture a sense of energy and movement in the characters.

Watch the art video and be inspired by drawing this Cyclops creature. By the way, if you've arrived at this tutorial thinking we are going to be drawing Cyclops from the X-men....What a Donkey you are! and also Sorry in advance, maybe next time!

Coloring Stage Of The Cyclops Drawing

When it came to the coloring stage I used Crayola Twistables to get the job done as they are cheap and they last longer than regular Crayola colored pencils. The idea is to use the colors selected as layers whenever possible to get a skin tone that can be blended with two or three colors. I used a Brown for the tan on the Cyclops creature this acted like a draker shadow that was placed next to the ink lines so that it could emphasize the shaded areas and then I added a Peach color which almost resembles a Human skin color to the larger skin areas.

I left some white areas as this could be for a Yellow at a later time to add to blend all the three colors together. The greens on the ragged looking pants were effectively colored and the club with the spikes on was a Brown and Orange color.

Try and color your Cyclops drawing anyway you want and have fun drawing!

Drawing A Cyclops Head

When drawing a different Cyclops head all you have to really do is try and alternate between the many different ideas in your head. The following step by step photos are based on a Classic Ray Harryhausen Cyclops creature and I just had to draw it.

Follow along and see if you can draw this yourself.
