How to make Rainbow Roses: a Step by Step Guide

What is a Rainbow Rose ?
Rainbow Roses are the multi colored roses which are not artificial. You shall not believe your eyes after looking at these gorgeous looking flowers. Do you not think that these Roses are perfect for giving as gifts?
Now everybody will wonder how they did it. Most people will think that it is something like genetic engineering or cross- breeding thing. Some may hope to get a sibling and plant it in their own small gardens. No, you are in bad luck. It is not possible yet to grow rainbow roses in your gardens. There is a technique behind those colors.

How to make a Rainbow Rose?
It is a simple process but the results are magnificent. You can do this by using transportation system of vascular plants. The xylem tubes of the roses stem sucks water and send it to the top end, to the leaves and the petals of the flowers. If the stem of a rose is submerged in colored water, it will pump the colored water to the flower. From the petals the water is evaporated but the color particles remain there. In this way the colors will be stored in the petals. As the outer layer of the petals of a white rose is transparent it will show this particular color. Do you get the physics (and botany too) behind?
Multi-Colored Roses
Now how to make a single flower multi colored? If you dip the stem in different colors one by the colors will be mixed. You shall not get different petals with different colors. The solution of the problem is splitting. If you split the end part of the rose’s stem and submerge in different colors you shall get a multicolored rainbow rose.
Here is a step by step guide to make your own Rainbow Roses.
Step by Step Process Guide
STEP 1: Cut a perfect white rose from your garden with 8-9inches stem or buy such.
STEP2: You need to have water soluble colors. Choose four colors. Colors should be much different from each other with high contrast value. Do not choose both blue and indigo but replace one with violet. In the same way do not choose both orange and red. I shall suggest these combinations: RED-BLUE-GREEN-YELLOW, VIOLET-RED-BLUE-YELLOW or YELLOW-PURPLE-GREY-BLUE.
STEP3: Collect four cups or glasses filled with water. Add color to the water and steer well. Add drops of color until the water becomes totally opaque. Four cups will contain four different color solutions.

STEP4: Split the end part of the severed stem. Use a knife or sharp blade to cut lengthwise up to 6 inches.
STEP5: The four ends of the split stem is now should be dipped into four color cups. It should stand erect. Otherwise give support to it.
STEP6: Wait for 24 hours and see the magic. Look at the transformation of your simple white rose! Now take it out. After that bind the split ends using adhesive tapes.

Points to be Noted
Take care of these to not to end in failure!
- Do not choose a red or pink rose to color.
- Colors should be water soluble
- Colors should be blended very well with the water. Mix it well.
- The process of splitting should be done carefully. Watch out for your fingers.
- Do not keep it in direct sunlight. The rose will be dried and the petals will be dropped with the slightest touch.
In this way you can produce colorful Rainbow Roses as many as you like. Give to your friends and loved one and do not forget to notice the surprise in their faces. I am wishing best of luck to you all.

Wow, it's my first time to see these rainbow roses. My first instance in this kind of craft is when I experimented it with a red rose and used blue food coloring. Nice hub! I'll definitely give it a try :)

I had no idea you could do this. It's amazing - the roses are incredible. Thanks for showing us how to do this.
Thank you so much for the instructions. My mother received a dozen of these beautiful roses. I spent the following 2 weeks trying to figure out how they made them SO beautiful. I will try this as soon as I can find some white roses and share them with others. Thanks in advance for the smiles that I will no doubt see.
This is really also a fun science project to do with kids. I did it with my granddaughter, of course only using one rose as they are expensive, and she loved it.
I would suggest showing pictures of each of your color pallet choices so we know how they turn out. I love several of them, but don't know which colors great which roses.
this is awesome!!!! I've been obsessed with these roses for years!!! Thank you sooo much for great tips and presentation!!!! I'm so doing this!

Hi I want to do this for my science fair but what if I use a red rose instead of a white rose
so colourful pin
Looking forward to trying this....funny thing is when you go to ali.com they sell the seeds for the muti-colored roses! haha...I think it is a scam.
I tried this and wasted all the Roses. The colour did not appear uniformly but was blotchy and speckled despite leaving it for days. The Roses also started looking shriveled. Not happy
Hi, so I was planning on making these, but not necessarily with roses as they tend not to last as long. Do you know if there are any other white flowers that can be altered for color this easily? I'm not a big flower buff, but I know carnations are usually a safe bet for lasting longer in a vase.
They are pretty
I bought some rainbow roses to cheer my ill daughter up then just had to know how it was done, what a quality article thankyou
What about a black rose? Same process? There is black food coloring? What else can i use?
It was ok
intrested
How long does the colouring last if it were to be put in a vase of normal water afterwards?
Can I cut off the split end after coloring instead of taping it?
Oh, and talking about the seeds for which I see eBay ad here - as far as I've read it is not possible to GROW rainbow roses, just to make them. Was that wrong?
what a charming roses
Never heard of this but this is out of this world beautiful. Voted up and more. Thanks for the inspiration! Awesome!
So pretty, they are!!! : )
Tried it. So far has been 20 hours & the only think that's happened is it's tinted blue a lil bit :/ disappointed
actually the main process to achieve good rainbow roses is while growing them and injecting dyes thru its stem,.like "happy roses" grows theirs,. it takes a week before the colors shows but it look much better and vibrant although it takes a lot of time and effort to grow a bush of longstemed roses,.
These are some wonderful looking flowers. I want to do this also! My wife and children will just adore these beautiful flowers! Thanks for the how to.
I just love theeeese roses. They make me all tingly inside and I just want to luv your 8========D

Very pretty. We use to color white flowers but only with one color. This looks like fun. I will have to try it. Voted Up and Beautiful.
I love this! My kids love to color flowers with colored water, but we never knew you could slice the stem and make a rainbow rose. We can't wait to try it! Great hub!
can we plant them in gardens..........plz reply...
what a load of pish
I've been trying this for weeks, but can't get the roses to take the color completely, it only becomes partially colored.
I wunder why some people would give 80$ and more fir a rose, you can make your self! The rainbow rose company sell these magical roses for around 80$ for 6 roses....you can make 12 a third of that praise yourself, and get the same result!
cool I did not know that a flower could do that.
do you recommend cutting it long ways or up the stem?
okay so i get the whole process but i can't get the cutting part down! 2 parts are always big and then parts are really tinny, so my rose ends up being just 2 colors with the tips the other colors. How do you get them to be even?
FANTASTIC Hub! Thanks for the 411...
okay thanks!
The roses I got had tiny stems so I could only cut it in half so would it work with 2 colors?
if you place the red cup and the blue cup by each other does purple show up in the petals
Wow!! It's so adorable!! :)
--Please follow me :)
Trying this right now with a white peony. It's been about 2 or 3 hours and I'm starting to see results. Blue and green tips on all the petals. I'm excited to see how it will look tomorrow :)
Oh! Never mind. I just reread and saw 24 hours.
I can't wait!!!
How long does it take for the magic to happen?(:
Maybe days...
Do u think our project will work :)
Hey we have a project due and we are going to try it with different flowers lol luv you home boy ;)
Will food coloring work? Not sure what to use for the dye...
