How to start teaching drawing to kids
Learn how to draw techniques for kids - Teaching drawing to little children is easy if proper ways are applied, as up to the age of seven they are super learners and this is the best time to teach them how to draw. Some important things we all must do is make them feel free to draw whatever they want specially at the initial stage and make it interesting so that they don't feel bore. Encouragement is also very important to keep that interest live. I have a group of students from the age group of 3.5-12 yrs and I must tell you that toddlers generally like drawing and enjoy every bit of it as compared to the older ones. They are highly creative and love to draw and coloring of course is the best part they enjoy. Let me share one experience with you all, i was teaching to draw a dinosaur one day and when saw the outcome i was so surprised as one of them created a monster out of a dinosaur with 10 heads and he is just 4.5 yrs old. I am thankful to these small kids who surprise me almost daily and proves that they are more creative and amazing. Below are few steps that I follow fro kids of the age group 3.5yrs - 5yrs which has helped these kids learn drawing faster. Remember that drawing is more important then coloring as they are always ready for coloring so fix a time slot for the drawing part first and coloring part second.
How to draw - ways that help kids to learn drawing
Scribbling - Scribbling is the first attempt that a child does after actually picking and holding a pencil in hand. So scribbling can start even at the age of 2 yrs or the moment child holds a pencil. So how can you help them do scribbling whenever they want to do it? Well, paste white charts on the walls and keep the colors aside. Do some drawing coloring on these charts whenever your child is around, it usually attracts kids and they start doing scribbling on their own. Let them do as much they enjoy whether they make wavy lines or rounded circles just let them do as much as they enjoy. Any such activity should never be forceful as this can weaken there muscles at an early age. Scribbling helps a lot for wrist movement also.
Join the dots - Second stage is joining the dots where you can provide them straight or wavy dotted lines, or dotted shapes or alphabets. Initially give them big sized shapes and gradually reduce its size according to performance. Joining the dots practice regularly with the use of crayons or sketch pens helps them learn fast. I usually keep giving join the dots worksheets of bananas and apples regularly to my students. You will see that they start drawing these fruits without the lines after few attempts.
Lines - Introduce all possible lines that you can think of, like straight, sleeping, wavy, dotted, rainy, zig zag, slanting, curved, checks, and many more. See the image below for reference. Don't give only one type of line for the whole long time as this makes them bore, rather introduce 3-4 different lines in a day. Remember in schools they are already learning straight and sleeping lines but when we teach for the purpose of drawing it should not be boring. Divide a single page into 4-6 parts and let them fill different lines in different sections.
Shapes - Shapes play an important role in understanding and learning drawing even for the adults. Introduce shapes by pasting charts on the walls or plastic toys of different shapes. Start by giving the dotted shapes first of circle, triangle square etc and move on to the difficult ones as shown in the image. After this let them draw certain things out of the shapes like a ball for circle, a triangular clock, a cylindrical pencil holder, a square for a house and so on.
Alphabet drawings - Just like shapes are for all alphabets are for kids, kids learn drawing very fast with the use of alphabets. Now how to draw using alphabets? See image below.
'A' can be used to make an ice cream cone or a doll, 'B' for a butter fly or specs, 'C' for moon and so on. Once they start learning drawing this way, they keep thinking of what else can they make out of an alphabet. Below is a link which shows how easy it is to learn drawing with the use of alphabets.
Basics - Now comes the basics where i teach different types of trees starting with very simple ones, second the clouds, house or huts, sky, moon, sun, birds, water, mountains, stones, grass etc. In 9 out of ten drawings of children you find these elements first so i call these my basics.
Small compositions - Now start teaching kids how to draw basic compositions like,
a) A simple nature scene with a house, clouds, trees, mountains, sun, birds and water. b) A city scene with a road, buildings, houses, cars, sky, clouds, sun etc. c) One under water scene with fishes, sea weeds, octopus, water, corals, start fish.
Clay - How clay helps kids to learn drawing? Well, when kids play with clay they make certain shapes or bodies which help them understand the shape. For example, when kids are asked to make a snake using clay and draw it later they do it pretty well as they know that they are required to make thin lines to make a snake body. I experiment this many times in my class and kids not just learn this way but also enjoy.
Besides all this fruits and vegetables drawings helps kids to learn to draw. Fruits are usually rounded so they understand how to draw fruits much faster. You can also ask them to draw fruits by keeping fresh fruits on the table. Next is teach them how to draw on topics like my family, my garden, my house, and more such simple stuff. I am sure after following these simple ideas your kids will learn to draw. Each child has his or her own interest on what they actually want to draw, so we must let them draw and learn on topics of there individual interest.
