Make Your Own Barbie Doll Blanket Set

Updated on November 22, 2010

A fun & easy project

A great idea for a child’s sewing project is a Barbie doll blanket. These take very little in the way of fabric or time, they are easy, and you can have your little girl help you make it.

These can be made from almost any print, even a faux patchwork quilt printed fabric as shown in the photo, and tied off like a “real” quilt. You can also make pillows, pillowcases, and throw pillows to go with them, so you have a matched set.

Choose your fabrics

Doll blankets for Barbie doll beds are usually about 8” X 10”, so you will want to start with a piece of fabric that is at least 9” X 11” or a bit larger.

Since this is a doll quilt, it doesn’t really need to be warm. Therefore, instead of quilt batting for the interior, you can use a piece of flannel or a scrap of any thicker fabric.

Making the blanket

To make your quilt, cut the fabric pieces to size, one for the top and one for the backing. Cut your batting or interior piece to size as well. Lay the right sides of the fabric together and place the batting on top of that. Sew around the edges, leaving a gap at the bottom for turning the blanket right-side out.

Turn the blanket right-side out and iron it to flatten it a little. Then topstitch around the perimeter for a nice tailored look and to close up the gap you used for turning it. If you want to, you can quilt the blanket by machine stitching it. You can tie it off like a real quilt at this point, if desired. In fact, making a doll quilt is good practice for making a larger quilt someday.

The sky is the limit!

You are only limited by your imagination on this project. If you make throw pillows, you can center them with cute buttons or bows. You can make a rug from a scrap piece of felt or fleece, and fringe the ends for a realistic look. Don’t forget to make a small bed pillow and case.

A Barbie doll quilt makes a great project for moms and kids to work on together, or they make great stocking stuffers for the Barbie-loving girls on your Christmas shopping list.

Happy sewing!

      Hi Poet,

Maybe you could make a blanket for each of your little sweet dogs!

I think if I made these, my chihuahuas would steal them and sleep in them! Very beautiful doll beds. You are so creative!
