Step by Step guide to making a homemade Pen Stand / Pencil Holder with Old Floppy Disks

Updated on March 20, 2012

Ever wondered what you can do with old floppy disks, well the options are endless.

  • Use them as a coaster
  • Make it into a post card or a creative greeting card for your geeky boyfriend
  • Hook one into a chain by the write protection locks and wear it as a necklace
  • Hide a memory card or a top secret piece of paper inside it - become 007
  • Punch a hole in the middle and turn it into a clock
  • Lay them all over your table and use them as a table cover

Today there are countless ideas floating all over the Internet on how to be creative with these ancient artifacts of technology.

But about 10 years ago I had a pile of floppy disks which did not work anymore and I thought of the idea of making them into a pen holder.

Following steps will guide you through the process of making your very own homemade pen holder with old floppy disks.

You will need:

  • 5 floppy disks
  • Scotch tape
  • A pair of scissors

Step 1

Position floppy disks as shown in the image. If you position them exactly this way then you will be saving your self the trouble of edges not aligning correctly.

Step 2

Apply scotch tape in a cross to hold the floppy disks in position while you follow the remaining steps. And this will also make your homemade pen holder more sturdy.

Step 3

Now, position floppy disks perpendicular to the base (two at first) and start rolling tape around the outer surface. Be slow and steady if you want to avoid getting any bubbles under the tape. Ask someone for help if needed.

Step 4

After securing all four sides of floppy disks, the base is remaining. Now apply scotch tape covering outer surface of facing floppy disks while crossing the floppy disk on the base.

Congratulations - your homemade pen holder is ready

Go ahead put your new homemade pen holder to some use.

Put some pens, clips, markers or just about anything else. And from now on you will know where to look for when you need something.

Do leave a line or two to share what you thought about this hub.
