New Art - Conceptual Realism - David MacDowell
David MacDowell Beginnings
David MacDowell lives in Chesapeake Virginia. He is thirty-eight years old (as of 2010) and is a self taught artist.
He readily incorporates cultural icons, movies, and entertainment folk into his painting along with social themes with dark overtones. One reviewer has called his work "Disneyland on Drugs."
His paintings are often a juxtaposition of themes with surprising results. They are often darkly humorous or downright satirical. He will even lampoon other popular artists such as Robert Williams, Mark Ryden, Isabel Samaras.
Mr. MacDowell has had shows at Thinkspace Gallery, MModern Gallery, Upper Playground, Alcove Gallery, Compound Gallery, Gallery 1988, Last Rites Gallery, The Alternative Café and many many more.
Media, Technique and Inspiration
Clearly Mr. MacDowell is inspired by movies, Hollywood and its directors, books, and Disneyland themes. He is also inspired to paint parodies of other artists works (as can be seen below). These include Mark Ryden, Robert Williams and others.
Mr. MacDowell sketches out his ideas with graphite on canvas (or as a study on paper first) and then adds detail and color with brush and paint.
His medium is mainly acrylic on canvas.
Some of Mr. MacDowell's art includes partial nudity or "inappropriate gestures." If researching Mr. MacDowell with a younger person nearby please be aware of this fact.
