PS Fashion Retouching Tutorial

Updated on December 14, 2010

PS Fashion Retouching Tutorial

I love PS Fashion Retouching, everyone loves it. Because it looks terrific. The colors are impressive and the modals are glamorous as if they were unreal. They are real, however, just have been spelled by the magic of the Photoshop. Today, I present one of my PS Fashion Retouching Tutorial of a lovely girl. Have fun.

Here’s the after and before.

The original portrait is good. I mean the detail. For every PSer, the detail of the portrait is the soul. With enough detail, we can do anything, make any correction, achieve incredible effect under the magic wand of Photoshop. This sample has the potential. Bad thing is, we’ve got lots of work to do on it. Moving on.

Analysis:

1.       too gray, the level should be redone.

2.       Contrast is not enough, curves shall be done.

3.       Highlight is not enough, also curves

4.       Colors not outstanding enough, we need to do with the Selective color, Hue and Saturation

5.       Skin tones soften

6.       Eyeball sharpening and brightening

7.       Lip color and hair color needs to be specially Hue and Saturated.

Apply:

Add a Levels layer.

The dark and white both have problem, losing too much detail. Need to adjust.

OK. See what it looks like now.

Much better, huh?

Curves

The curves adjustment is not complex, just a little bit difference, we omit that process.

Selective Color

As for a fashion retouching, the colors should be exaggerated. That’s what we do in here.

Still simple, just let red more red, magenta more magenta. In all, let colors more colorful. Exaggeration is the core.

Skin Retouching

Luckily, this portrait’s skin tones are nice, if you are a perfectionist, just go ahead with the channel technique to make the skin perfection, or you can apply our magical filter Portraiture 2.0.

Don’t know how to do the Skin Retouching?

Eyeball Retouching

First use curves to brighten up the whole eyeball, just to stand out.

Use Desaturation to desaturate the nasty stuff in the eye white, making it pure like white jade.

Use Smart Sharpen Filter to sharpen only the eyeball area. Remember, do not touch the very black dot center. Use the brush tool and mask, and use left and right bracket keys to control the size of the brush. I’d like to choose 1% for the smart sharpen radius.

If you want to change the color of her eyes, use the Hue adjustment layer, make it green, red or brown, as you wish.

Hair Retouching

The hair quality of her is good, but I just think the color looks normal. I wanna make it red.

Just use the Hue and Saturation adjustment layer to make the hair Red, like what I have showed in the very beginning of this tutorial. Use brush and mask. I love brush and mask combination, not other tools. They are easy to use.

Lip color Retouching

The lips look good, we just have to make the color shine and outstanding.

Again, use the Hue and Saturation adjustment layer, make it red and lightened up a little bit.

It is supposed to be an end here. I’d also make other versions of this portrait, different styles, different feelings. Hope you enjoy.
