Photo Silhouette Adobe Photoshop Tutorial
Open Your Image
Find a picture that you would like to use for this tutorial. It would be a good idea to use an image that does not have a busy background. An action picture or a portrait might be a good option.
Duplicate Your Layer
As always, make sure you duplicate your layer so that you are always working with a copy. You do this by right clicking on the layer and selecting "Duplicate Layer". Then, right click on the duplicated layer and select "Convert to Smart Object".
Creating the Silhouette
Now you are going to add an artistic filter to your image. Go to Filter>Filter Gallery. Select Sketch>Torn Edges. Adjust Image Balance, Smoothness, and Contrast to get the look you want. Click OK.
New Fill Layer
At the bottom of the layers panel click on the black and white circle called "Create new fill or adjustment layer". Choose Gradient.
Add Your Gradient
Choose your gradient. Click on the gradient to see the options. You can also create your own. You can also adjust the Style, Angle, and Scale of your gradient to get the look you want.
Now change the type of layer blending mode from normal to lighten. Whatever was black in your layer below will now take on the gradient color.
Or, invert your image for a different look.
