Tips for automobile photography

Like I have mentioned in other hubs, almost anything can be photographed and cars are no exception. Photographing cars:the little things, is not only easy but fun too.

The love affair between the American Public and the automobile has continued from the moment the first automobile was introduced, no wonder automobiles remain a very popular photographic subject. Next time you feel like photographing cars, try these tips for better automobile photography, and yes, you will fall in love with your car all over again..or maybe not.

Most automobile photos and the photographers who take those photos tend to concentrate on entire-car photography, taking various angles of the entire automobile. Here's a variation, try photographing small details such as logos, specially the older models; Oldsmobile's from the early to late 80's had exquisite logos.

Try focusing on chrome accents or chrome parts, reflections of the car, partial shots of the car that reveal just enough to realize that it's a car but not enough to reveal the make or model; these are great for conversation topics.

Pay attention to paint contrasts (where one color meets another), and don't overlook the interior as well as the motor. A visit to a car show can offer a bounty of opportunity, not only can most cars be photographed but often with the owners gratitude, after all you are admiring their car.

Not to be missed is a visit to a junkyard. Shoot various stages of corrosion, but try to only shoot photos in which the car is mostly discernible(model/make). Include some of the surroundings on these shots to give your viewer an atmosphere of location, time, condition etc.

Do pay attention before you press the shutter, as most car paints, parts, accents will be reflective, and unless you plan to be in the shot, shoot at a slight angle.Be also aware of the shutter speed, you should be able to use higher speeds and therefore avoid blur due to movement.

Ad shots of the motor if it's well taken care off or "supup" as well as the interior. Look for images that are pleasing and ad charm to the shot as well as perhaps telling a little bit of the history of the make.

You'll be surprised what detailed automobile photography can reveal as well as the challenges that it provides, which if nothing else can enhance your photographic panorama.
