Quick Tip- Create Awesome Text Effect with Scratched Stroke in Photoshop

Updated on November 3, 2015

In this short tutorial I will show you all the steps to create beautiful Text Effect with the help of Blending Options, Layer Mask and an ordinary Hard Round Brush.

I have used default Leelawadee Font with added Stroke to make it look thicker.

The Background is created with Radial type of Gradient and Wall Texture which is my own photo and unrestricted stock.

This is the outcome you should get if you decide to follow all my steps:

Create a new folder where you are going to place your .psd file, texture and the final image saved in a format you have chosen.

Now open Adobe Photoshop, look at the Menu bar and select File, New. Name your document Awesome Text, insert 1300 Pixels for Width and 700 Pixels for Height, set also the Resolution to 96 Pixels/Inch, choose RGB Color for Color Mode and select Transparent for Background Contents. When transparent Layer 1 appears in your Layers panel, double click on the layer's name and type Gradient, then press Ctrl+G to place your first layer in a group. Rename this Group 1 to Background.

If you want to print your final result, set the Resolution to 300 Pixels/Inch and select CMYK for Color Mode.

Prepare Background with Radial Gradient and Wall Texture

In the coming four steps you have to create the Background for our Text Effect. Everything is very simple. Firstly you have to colorize the first layer with dark shaded Radial Gradient, then you are going to add the Wall Texture, resize it and change its Blend Mode.

Keep Gradient layer selected, then navigate to the Tools bar and Set Foreground Color to #716205. Change also Background Color to #0a0003. Take Gradient Tool and firstly select Foreground to Background Gradient from the Gradient Picker in the Options bar. Select also the icon which indicates Radial type of Gradient. Now you are ready with the settings, so drag from the middle to any corner of the canvas to colorize it. You should get a similar result.

Now you have to download this Wall Texture. For the purpose only click on it and when it pops out on your screen in high res, right click on it and select Save As. Place it in the folder you created in Step 1.

Create a New Layer on top of Background group and name it Wall Texture. Open in Photoshop the Texture you already downloaded in Step 3, press Ctrl+A to Select the whole of it, then press Ctrl+C to Copy it. Return to your Awesome Text .psd file (Wall Texture layer should be highlighted) and press Ctrl+V to Paste the Texture in the selected layer.

Navigate to the Menu bar and select Edit, Free Transform. Take a chosen node and move it in inner direction to resize the Texture. It should cover your canvas. Press Enter key to apply the Transformation when you are ready.

Change Blend Mode of Wall Texture layer to Hard Light and reduce Opacity to 30%.

Type the Text, Copy its Layer Twice and Add Blending Options

In Steps 6-15 you have to type your Text using thick default Font, then you need to make two duplicates of its layer and lower Fill Opacity of all Text layers to 0%.

The next task you have to implement is to apply Blending Options on both upper Text layers to colorize and give pattern and volume to your Awesome Text Effect.

We'll start to create the Text in this step. Take Horizontal Type tool and navigate to the options bar to modify the settings of the instrument. Firstly select Leelawadee Font from the Font Family drop down menu. If you don't have this default font in your Photoshop version, any other thick font could be chosen. Only try to set its Size so that it resembles the Text on my screenshot, in other case the layer styles applied won't look the same.

After you have selected Leelawadee Font, set the Font Style to Bold and change the Font Size to 200pt. Set the Text Color to#eafb9d then type Effect using capital letters. As we are going to add thick Stroke later, we need a bigger space between the latters. For the purpose highlight the whole Text and click on Toggle the Character and Paragraph Panels icon in the Options bar. When Character dialog box appears on your screen, Set the Tracking for the Selected Characters to 150.

Now move your Effect Text layer on top of Layers pane and press Ctrl+G to put it in a group. Rename its group to Text Effect.

While the Effect Text layer is selected, press twice Ctrl+J to make two duplicates. Leave Effect copy layer on top of Text Effect group but move Effect copy 2 layer at the bottom of the group. Reduce Fill Opacity of all three Effect layers to 0%. The Text will disappear but don't worry. It is normal with these Fill settings. You'll see again your Text in the next step when you'll start to add layer styles.

Right click on the original Effect Text layer ( in the middle of Text Effect group) and select Blending Options (Layer, Layer Style, Blending Options). The first Layer Style to be applied is Drop Shadow so check it in Layer Style dialog box and change the following settings:

Color of Shadow: #500505

Opacity: 90%

Distance: 0px

Spread: 20%

Size: 13px

Contour: Rounded Steps.

Keep Laeyr Style box active because we have to apply another five Blending Options in the coming steps.

The second Layer Style to be applied on Effect layer is Outer Glow. Change seven of its settings:

Blend Mode: Color Dodge

Opacity: 100%

Noise: 7%

Color of Glow: #4ad6e3

Technique: Precise

Size: 13px

Contour: Sawtooth 1.

Now apply Gradient Overlay Layer Style and change these settings:

Blend Mode: Overlay

First Color Stop (Location 0%): #6d360b

Second Color Stop (Location 50%): #f0c15b

Third Color Stop (Location 100%): #a5133c

Angle: 90 degrees

Scale: 80%.

The fourth Layer Style to be added to Effect layer is Inner Glow. Change the following settings:

Blend Mode: Soft Light

Opacity: 100%

Noise: 100%

Color of Glow: #e89552

Source: Center

Size: 50px

Contour: Rounded Steps.

Now we are going to add 10px wide Stroke so tick Stroke Layer Style in the dialog box and change these settings:

Size: 10px

Position: Inside

Fill Type: Gradient

First Color Stop (Location 0%): #590606

Second Color Stop (Location 100%): #ca4b4b

Angle: 90 degrees.

In order to add 3D Effect, tick Bevel and Emboss Layer Style and change only three of its settings:

Color for Highlight: #f69090

Color for Highlight Opacity: 100%

Color of Shadow Opacity: 40%.

Now you can press OK button to close Layer Style box and to apply the Blending Options.

Your Text Effect will look like this so far after applying the previously described six layer styles:

Now select Effect copy layer (the one on top of Text Effect group), right click on it and select Blending Options. Firstly tick Gradient Overlay and modify four of its settings:

Blend Mode: Overlay

Gradient: select Gold, Teal, Green Gradient

from the Gradient Picker

Angle: 90 degrees

Scale; 150%.

We are going to add also 3D Effect to Effect copy layer so tick Bevel and Emboss Layer Style and change these settings:

Style: Emboss

Technique: Chisel Hard

Depth: 1000%

Size: 20px

Color for Highlight: #fafb95

Opacity: 60%

Color of Shadow: #790909

Opacity: 60%.

This is how your Text will look after adding the Blending Options to Effect copy layer:

Apply Stroke on the Second Duplicated Text Layer, Rasterize it and Add Layer Mask

In the coming eleven steps you need firstly to add Stroke to the second duplicated Text layer and then Rasterize the Layer Style.

After that you have to apply Layer Mask and start brushing within it to give the Stroke grunge look. You'll finish your work with adding shadow and 3D Effect to the Stroke layer.

Now its time to select Effect copy 2 layer (the one at the bottom of Layers panel). Apply this Stroke Layer Style on it:

Size: 18px

Fill Type: Gradient

First Color Stop (Location 0%): #cda04a

Second Color Stop (Location 100%): #f4d792

Angle: 90 degrees.

This is the result so far after applying the thick Stroke on Effect copy 2 layer:

Right click on Effect copy 2 layer and select Rasterize Layer Style.

Keep the rasterized Effect copy layer selected then click on Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of Layers panel (Layer, Layer Mask, Reveal All).

Now grab Brush Tool and select Hard Round Brush. Set its Size to 1px. Your Foreground/Background Color should be set to Black/White after applying the Layer Mask in the previous step. Keep the Layer Mask thumbnail selected.

Start making random scratches with the previously chosen Brush as you see on the following screenshot:

Continue making scratches on each stroked letter with the Hard Round Brush until you get similar outcome:

Double click on Effect copy 2 layer's thumbnail to activate Layer Style box. Firstly tick Drop Shadow and change these five settings:

Color of Shadow: #8c7724

Opacity: 100%

Distance: 5px

Spread: 40%

Size: 13px.

The second Layer Style to be applied on Effect copy 2 layer is Inner Shadow. Change the following five settings:

Color of Shadow: #493206

Opacity: 60%

Distance: 0px

Size: 8px

Contour: Gaussian.

Now we have to add subtle relief to our scratched Stroke. Tick Bevel and Emboss Layer Style and leave all its settings as given by default.

Our Awesome Text Effect with Scratched Stroke is ready. Those of you who have decided to follow all my steps in detail should have these two groups and layers in their Layers pane:

  1. Background group with two layers in it: Gradient and Wall Texture and

  2. Text Effect group which includes the following three layers: Effect copy 2 layer (the rasterized one), Effect and Effect copy layer.

This is my Text Effect saved in .jpg format. If you like, you can apply Filter, Sharpen, Unsharp Mask to improve the final result.
