Body Art for the City - San Marcos, Texas' Tattoos

As a resident of San Marcos, Texas and someone who has a deep appreciation for art, I am a huge fan of city murals and graffiti art. As you can see from the pictures below, life in San Marcos revolves around the San Marcos River. It is by far the city's most valuable resource in terms of history, tourism and ecological sustainability. It is a great tool as well for the students at Texas State University who are studying Geography, Biology, Nature and Heritage Tourism, and other fields of study. So much of San Marcos's identity is derived from the River.

San Marcos and Patriotism

San Marcos is proud of the selfless men and women who have chosen service in the United Stated military to defend our borders and way of life. This mural located on San Antonio Street just off of the Square honors their service and sacrifice. As a veteran who served in the United States Army, seeing my city build these murals, statues, and memorials makes me proud to be a San Martian!

San Marcos Pop Culture Art

If there is one more thing that San Martians are proud of, it is that sense of the eclecticism, weirdness, and uniqueness that sets them apart from anything else. These murals below pay homage to several well-known pop culture subjects.

Conduit for Graffiti Art

Graffiti art has come a long way from the public nuisance it started out as. It has become a well respected artistic style. A lot of cities, like San Marcos, have embraced it and have proudly incorporated it into the city's landscape.

Artistic Personality for the City

San Marcos has truly embraced the artistic scene in San Marcos from the once a month weekend Art Squared market to San Martian Culture nights at Zelick's Bar on West Hopkins Street. It's not just visual art, either. San Marcos is a place for musical art, performance art, ballet, and so much more! Come see!

What beautiful works of art! I usually dislike graffiti but that's because it's often horrible, but these are really gorgeous. I like the one with the children on it and Eddie Durham's mural.
