Why Was September Declared National Sewing Month?

Let's Bring Alive Our Lost Memories

Ronald Regan, who was the 40th president of United States of America declared September to be National Sewing Month in the year of 1982. He took this step to inculcate the importance and recognition of home sewing to the entire world. Through his novel initiative, we are now celebrating this beautiful month and promoting the rich heritage and culture of our nation to younger generation.

Visit here to read the proclamations made by President Ronald on September 27, 1985 regarding National Sewing Month.

Nowadays, in the age of science and technology, younger generation are inclining towards latest gadgets, cell phones, laptops, etc. and making video games, social networking, etc, as their hobbies. I am not criticizing the technology but I just remember the olden golden days, when my mom used to teach my elder sisters sewing, embroidery, cooking, crocheting and many more important skills, which can be helpful in later part of her life.

The True Essence of National Sewing Month

Humble Beginning: Make Sewing Your Favorite Hobby

My mom is sewing since she was a child and never ever, she dislikes it. Whether she is sick or busy with other home chores, she will definitely stitch pajamas, beautiful shirts and curtains. She loves to work on cotton, linen, satin, velvet, wool, lace, etc. and have a great portfolio in her old wooden almirah.

Honestly, sewing is a great and exciting hobby, and I would love to say that it is useful hobby because you will lose button sometime in your life and you don’t have mother at your side or you are alone at home. At that time, your sewing skills will come into play.

In order to learn sewing, you can take help of your mother, friends or relatives. There are some other resources as well, which will guide you systematically in learning and mastering sewing such as ebooks and videos in quick period of time. But, you should have necessary tools to start sewing.

You may ask why not choose hand sewing instead of machine sewing. It’s simple because hand sewing consumes a lot of time and there can be lot of sewing errors. So, the best way to start sewing is with the aid of sewing machine, which don’t require any special skills like Spiderman to start.

How To Select Best Sewing Machine

Consider Your Budget And Needs Before Choosing Sewing Machine

There are loads of sewing machines to choose from, but you need to consider your budget, brand and needs before buying. As for the budget, they usually cost between the ranges of $50 to $500 and even up. Singer and Brother are the best brands to try out. My mom has a Singer sewing machine, which her mother presented on eve of the marriage. It is heavy and comes with teakwood stand. In addition, beautiful designs are inscribed on the body.

I would advise you to buy a new sewing machine rather than an older one because it will give numerous benefits and advantages in your new journey. Buying a new machine is well worth and handy in saving you lots of money and time on servicing, oiling and other necessary repairs, which subject to occur due to being old and used machine. Choose wisely even if it consumes time or more money.
