Sewing Projects for Beginners
You just bought a sewing machine and have learned some basics. What caused you to start it? Whatever your reason is, you actually did a good job in trying to sew. There are a lot of benefits of having a sewing skill, and in fact, it can be part of your income. As beginners, you need simple projects and here are some of the things that you can do:
1. Pillow & Cushion Cover
Pillow and cushion covers are very simple and easy to make. When I first started sewing, I made a collection of cushion covers for my home. I have a set of purples, reds, greens, florals and abstracts. You name it. I made it as my home decor project.
For beginners like you, you can sew based on the cushion covers that you already have now. Take the measurement and start cutting the cloth by leaving a little bit for the hem. I suggest you to start with envelope cover first. Then, you can start sewing with the zipper.
Creativity is at the tips of your fingers. Some styles include ruffled, embellished and embroidered. You can get some inspirations from DIY sites and also Etsy.
2. Boxer Pants
Either you're a guy or a girl, you can make your own boxer pants. The best thing is, you can wear or sell them. I made some of my boxer pants and I'm still wearing them until today. I sewn them with pockets, and also added some lace.
You can have your own boxer and you save a lot! Retail stores are selling cute / stylish boxer pants for $15 or more. Meanwhile, you can make a couples boxer pants for half the price.
For girls, you can add ribbons, and as for boys, you can have classic patterns or simple ones. You have the power to choose your designs. Enhance your wardrobe and collect all shades of colors. Maybe one day you can sell your designated boxer pants at flea market! Who knows!
3. Pajama Pants
Once you've made your boxer pants, upgrade your skills to make pajama pants. They are similar and again you can choose your own materials. Isn't a silk pajama pants too expensive? Go buy your own silk and sew it for yourself.
As you get better in sewing, opt for embroidery and create your signature initials on your pants! It will be personal and you'll feel attached to it. Have your pajama with a drawstring so you can adjust the waist part.
Sometimes, your hunt for the most comfortable pair of pajama pants is a pain in the neck. You can't get your size. Maybe you're too tiny or extra large. You need your own size. There you go, sew your pajama pants to get the right fit.
4. Grocery Bag
I love the idea of saving our mother Earth. As a responsible person, I try my best to help and reduce the usage of plastic bags. I recommend that you start to be part of this campaign as well - by designing your own grocery bags.
Find good materials and get matching straps for them. What I like about creating this is you can have multiples of them nicely folded in the main bag, then take them out at the counter when you're paying for the groceries. More interestingly, it is as if you went for an exclusive grocery store as you walk out! Be stylish and be green.
5. Drawstring Bags
Whether you're a man or a woman, drawstring bags have numerous functions. You can use it for travelling or as a dust bag.
I like the idea of keeping my shoes in drawstring bags and have my initials on them. When I keep the shoes inside the bags, it seems like I bought them from the same store. Choose your favorite color and use long-lasting materials. Canvas is a good choice for a dust bag.
Fashionable drawstring bags are fancy too especially for girls. You can make cute totes. Or maybe use them as a gift bag rather than wrapping your presents during Christmas. What do you think?
