In Romania we can find around 2500 lakes of various types, such as volcanic, glacial, or with sweet or salt water, all of them having their own special beauty.
Lacul Roșu (Red Lake)
One of the lakes I chose to present is the Red Lake (locally known as Lake Ghilcos). The lake is a natural dam formed in 1837 at the foothills of Hasmasul Mare Mountain, near Bicaz Gorges (Cheile Bicazului).
The name of Red Lake (Lacul Roșu) comes from the reddish alluvia deposited in the lake by the Red Creek.
Having the colour of blood, the name of the lake has become both Red Lake and Killer Lake. There is also a legend that villagers cursed this lake because a lot of children died in this lake.
