That Night on State Street

Updated on April 13, 2016

After she took the oath,

she felt her confidence breaking,

she was literally shaking,

her nerves would flap,

she sat demurely,

hands in her lap,

she felt like a mouse,

being chased by a cat,

and the jurors could see that,

it was that night on State Street,

she witnessed a murder,

not more than six feet,

she was right there,

so on the witness stand,

she was collapsing from fear,

and the killer would stare,

right from the defense chair,

no remorse, not a care,

and everything she said,

just hung in the air,

they would take her back to that night,

the horrible sight,

her voice was weak,

and the fear had grown,

she couldn’t speak,

as the court clerk asked her

to talk into the microphone,

her sanity wanted to explode,

she wanted to shout,

all of a sudden, there was no doubt,

she sat quietly,

and she pointed him out.

It is so easy to relate to this ... what a great job ... you've said a 'mouthful' in such a short space ... you have us all feeling the fear and determination of this woman in a courtroom ... superb.

      Voted up, awesome, and interesting.

Frank, I have to ask...how do you keep doing it? Are you surrounded by violence or do you have that much of an imagination? :) Another well written poem that expresses the underbelly of life.

As a person who has had the experience of identifying a criminal (I was robbed at gunpoint), I can say you perfectly described the witness. You are GOOD at this Frank.

Courage equals grace under fire (Hemingway, I think), and a witness facing a murderer in a courtroom would have to dig deep to find it. Up!

Wow you've nailed it in poetry how many witnesses have felt ever since they've been called to give testimony, Frank my man. How intimidating it must be to give evidence against something you fear retaliation from. Won't give the ending away except to say she's some kind of lady, good.
