The Art of Street Artist Banksy
Banksy is a British street artist who specializes in spray paint graffiti and stencils. He's a political activist whose actual identity remains unknown. His works of art often feature subversive or satirical messages, such as when he broke into the London Zoo and spray painted "We're bored of fish" in the penguin enclosure.
Banksy has become so popular that some building owners have actually granted him permission to use their building as a canvas. Now that Banksy has drawn the attention of the art world, it's not unusual for his art work to be removed from its original location and displayed in a gallery. This is an incredible fact considering Banksy uses the sides of buildings to make his art and removing a section of building can be quite expensive.
What does the future hold for Banksy? Will we ever know his true identity? Only time will tell.
***UPDATE*** A documentary about Banksy titled "Exit Through the Gift Shop" has received worldwide acclaim and has brought international fame to this reclusive artist. Banksy is interviewed in the documentary, although he wears a hoodie over his face and his voice is disguised. The film, and Banksy's artwork, showed up in Park City, Utah last year for the Sundance Film Festival.
