The Photography of Andreas Gursky

Updated on May 30, 2015

Andreas Gursky Biography

Andreas Gursky is a German photographer whose work currently holds the record for the highest price ever paid for a photograph, which is $3.3 million.

Gursky's focus is usually on unusual architecture or beautiful landscapes, although his record breaking photograph was of the inside of a huge discount store.

Some of Gursky's more popular photographs feature a large number of people. They include an overhead view of the Chicago Board of Trade and a photo of a Chinese factory. Like many of Gursky's photographs, it features vibrant colors and intricate details of a massive area. I think Gursky is trying to show us the "smallness" of the individual in a world that can only be described as massive. The themes of industrialization are also present in many of Gursky's most famous works.

At just 55 years old, expect Gursky to remain a figure in the world of photography for many years to come.

$3.3 million for a photograph? Wow! Time to dust off that old camera and take some photos. :)
