What is Canva and Why you should use it?

Updated on May 26, 2017

What is Canva

Canva is a free graphic-design website. It has an easy to use interface and provides pre-made templates for your design projects. Canva provides photographs, graphics, and fonts as well as giving you the ability to upload your own photos and backgrounds for your designs.

  1. Canva has pre built templates. This means that the dimensions are broken down for you depending on want you want to design. They have templates for invitations, cards, website banners and flyers so that you do not have to fumble with finding and formatting the the sizes of the project. In addition to per built templates you can make you own custom dimension for your project.

2. Typography is a key element in design and Canva has made pre matched typefaces that make your designing process easier. As well as pre matched typefaces you can also chose your own typeface from the selection and make your own paring.

3. Canva has really stepped up their game and now offers a feature that allows you play with the kerning (the process of adjusting the spacing between characters) leading (distance between the baselines of successive lines of type). In my opinion this is a game changer when it comes to dealing with the difference between adobe illustrator and canva.

4. Canva has mostly free elements that you can use for designs. They do have premium images and illustrations but they only cost $1.00. I have not needed to buy any of their designs element, but they are there of you need extra choices for your design. You can also upload images such as pictures and backgrounds in Canva to use in your composition.

So why Should you use Canva?

Canva will solve 99% of all of your design needs. As a graphic designer I have used both Canva, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. With this experience I have found that Canva fits most projects that I need to do every day. If I need to design a quick invitation, card, poster, business card, social media banner or flyers Canva will work for you. In my opinion Canva is like Adobe Illustrator with training wheels. It provides the same service, but the pre made templates help make design choices easier. Also Canva is FREE while Adobe costs money. I am subscribed to the Adobe's Creative Cloud for school and it costs me around $300.00 a year. For me Canva is a great choice that offers everyone a easy to use free service that makes your design look professional!
