Tucker's Totes and Handbags

Updated on January 3, 2015

Don't throw your plastic bags away! Cut them into strips and knit them into colorful purses and totes. Anyone who can knit can do it. And they don't take long because big circular knitting needles are required (12 for newspaper bags and 13 for heavier plastic bags). The blue colors are from New York times bags and the reds and yellows from the Detroit Free Press. Reds and whites are mostly from Target bags. All you need are a variety of plastic bags and some big knitting needles and you're ready to go..

For more information on how to knit or crochet handbags or totes see the videos and articles linked below.

Thanks! I'll pass your comment on to my wife. Most of the bags are from our morning newspapers.

What a brilliant idea! Thanks for sharing this - somehow only just found the information and luckily most of our stores do not give them out now but I still do have a few that can be made into another bag.

An absolutely fantastic hub! I hope everyone reads this following the steps to making better use out of these terrible plastic bags. Lets do this! Help to protect our environment and at the same time make some gifts or create one of these beautiful totes for yourself. I am going to get started this week. Love it!

There is a large after market for those ghastly plastic bags. Thank you for giving good information and instruction to those who could do well with such a cottage industry. Help the earth, expend creativity, and earn extra money. Voted up, and shared.
