Upsycle, Recycle, Repurpose Creative Ideas

Updated on December 1, 2016

Introduction

Recycling has been a common practice for most of human history. Archaeological studies show that when resources were scare, there was less household waste, meaning there was a recycling process.During Wars, for instance, material shortages made it necessary for people to reuse goods and recycle materials.
Nowadays a number of different systems have been implemented to collect recyclates from the general waste stream and governments try to create recycling awareness encouraging people to do it at home.

3Rs - the Waste Hierarchy

We produce every day tonnes of waste. Manny things we currently throw away could be reused with some imagination, helping to create a more sustainable life.
Reduce, reuse and recycle (R3), sometimes called the waste hierarchy, are the three essential components of environmentally-responsible consumer behavior.
Using the 3Rs will help us cut back the amount of trash we throw away.

The Waste Hierarchy:

Reduce
to buy less and use less.
Reuse
elements of a discarded item or items are used again
Recycle
is the process to change items considered as waste into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials and reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials.

Within recycling there is distinction between two types:

Upcycling
converting low-value materials into high-value products
Downcycling
converting valuable products into low-value raw materials

Upcycling and recycling ideas have shown significant growth these recent years. Artists and designers have created all kind of materials and objects out from trash and we can find tutorials all around the net.

Enjoy some of those projects and begin to craft! You can make your own gifts for Christmas or other special days!
