What You Need to Oil Paint
When it comes down to it, art can be a wonderful way to relieve stress, while displaying your creativity in a positive manner. While some people prefer to draw, others enjoy plying the techniques, which were implemented by the old masters. Therefore, you might want to consider taking up oil painting, which is a wonderful and fun way to explore your creativity, although it might be a little messy. In order to get started, you're going to need to get your hands on some different types of materials and supplies. Below, you will find exactly what is needed to get started.
Canvas or Panels
You're obviously going to need something to lay your paint on. You have a few different options here. For instance, you might want to consider purchasing a roll of canvas, but you'll also need some stretcher bars. On the other hand, you can go ahead and purchase some stretched canvas, which will be ready to use. If you prefer a much tougher and harder surface, you'll want to go with panels. Of course, you cannot use oil painting panels, which is something that would be possible, while using stretched canvas, since you can use the stretcher bars time and again.
You're also going to need to purchase a few brushes. The fact of the matter is that you will not need a whole bunch of these, which is often a great misconception. In fact, you only need a few different brushes, if not just one. With a good big and small filbert brush, you will be able to paint almost any subject!
Finally, you're going to need something that is capable of cleaning your brushes of that messy oil paint, which cannot be removed with water. Therefore, you will need to purchase some turpentine or some type of brush cleaner, such as walnut oil, which can also be used as a oil painting medium. If you have weak longs, you should definitely purchase something harmless and scentless, since many of these chemicals can be very strong.
