What is Broomstick Lace Crochet
What is Broomstick Lace Crochet
Broomstick lace is a unique method of crocheting as it requires that a knitting needle is used in order to create the lacy loops. It is also known as jiffy lace because it works up quite fast.
The broomstick lace technique was discovered in the 19th century and is still being used today to create stylish crochet projects.
Originally it was done with an actual broomstick, but today the use of knitting needles is most common. It does not matter what is used as long as the dowel has a smooth surface that will not catch the yarn and fray it. The larger the dowel, the lacier the fabric will be. Larger dowels are suitable for thicker yarns, while thinner dowels work best with thin yarn or crochet thread.
The broomstick lace technique can be used to crochet a nice lacy fabric. It is perfect for crocheting afghans, bedspreads and other home decor, as well as bags, scarves, wraps, ponchos, legwarmers and other clothing.
The Broomstick Lace Technique
In broomstick lace there are basically two types of rows, known as the crochet row and the loop row. The crochet row is worked as normal from right to left, and the loop row is worked from left to right. This eliminates the need for turning the work at each row.
The loop row is worked by pulling up a loop in each stitch and placing it onto the knitting needle or any other suitable stick. The crochet row is then used to crochet the loops off of the needle. The loops can be worked individually or gathered into groups of two, three, four, five or six. Each group of loops is then worked into as if it were only one. The resulting design somewhat resembles a feathered peacock, which is why broomstick lace is sometimes referred to as peacock eye.
The type and number of stitches that are worked into each loop various from pattern to pattern. One can choose a combination of stitches, including the single crochet, double crochet or even the triple crochet stitch. The possibilities of the combinations are endless.
As with other crochet, it is very easy to increase or decrease in broomstick lace. The stitches are easily increased by crocheting more stitches into the set of loops, or decreased by reducing the amount of stitches in each set of loops.
Broomstick lace can also be worked in the rounds. The stitches are only joined on the crochet row, which once again allows the work to be done from one side only. The only time one would turn the work in broomstick lace is when there are two or more consecutive crochet rows.
