Mosaic for Kids

to help with Child Development and Learning

At the ages of 5 upwards, our children are developing fast, and we want to keep up, they have probably just started school, and you are noticing certain developmental milestones in your child, an important one at this time is helping to develop their Fine Motor Skills, and hand eye co-ordination.

Early stage puzzles and play dough, have helped shape and stimulate fine motor development because they require controlled use of hand and finger muscles, early on. And possibly the kids are just plain bored of them now. I know from working in a school that resources had to be cheap, and the more creative the better, it is too expensive just to run and out and buy something, especially if your budget is already spent.

Make Easy Paper Mosaics On a Budget

My daughter is 10 and likes to use squared graph paper, to draw her design.

There are many different mosaic tile designs that children can try out. However, in the beginning they should start with simple designs. Patterns of images that they see in day-to-day life should be practiced first. The simple designs for children include those of animals, birds, etc.

I found this great website that you can choose your graph or grid paper , and select your width, height etc.

Visit Here Great for tile patterns and maths projects.

Some glue and old magazines. The children love the thought of cutting these up, and can choose their colors themselves from the pages.

You don't need great artistic skill here either, you could use a children's' coloring book for inspiration, or to trace around the outline, let their imagination run wild, creating their masterpiece. Perhaps a name plate for their room.

Get them to roughly draw their desired picture. whilst they are doing this you can be cutting up the paper firstly into strips, then into smaller squares.

Start gluing the pieces of cut paper.

We personally prefer using a small block of colored desktop block notebooks, this means the kids can cut up the small pieces of paper, you can limit how much they get easier, great idea for classrooms, and you also do not waste as much paper this I have found is a much cheaper way to do it.

Or this pack of Stick -a-licks is pretty cheap and cool too! great for younger children!

These mosaic kits and pattern blocks, are great to have in your craft store. And all make great gifts, fun and sneakily educational too. I loved using the pattern blocks in the classroom or indeed for my own daughter at home especially on a rainy day, for Hours she would spend making all sorts of shapes and designs, encouraging her creativity.

I love any learning tool that helps us think outside the box and that's why I have made these printable animal alphabet flashcards. Perfect for learning their ABCs.

Mosaics are great hobbies for the elderly too. My grandmother made a gorgeous mosaic at the ripe old age of 89. I love it. It hangs in my kitchen today.

Very, very cool Lisa! I enjoyed this lens as I work with Mosaic Murals...one of my lenses features a Mosaic Mural "The Horse Gift Mural" the images were made into a book and kids or adults can make a Mural...many buy the books for charity events. Also another one I worked on is displayed on the lens.

Oh this is really helpful. I once made a trivet with those little tiles. Somehow it is a very calming project - to make these little mosaics and interesting patterns. For sure, it teaches pattern recognition, creativity and even math skills. Melissa and Doug products are of excellent quality. Thank you for sharing. Take good care, Rose
