I personally use the Faber Castell 9000 Design Series, I used to use Derwent Graphic, but found they split too easily on sharpening. The Faber Castell's give a much softer feel to a portrait and are great for blending with various grades.
try them all. every artist has their own preference based on the type of drawing they do.
I prefer a number 2. they work on any surface.

I'm in need of a good software tool that I can use for simple drawing, image manipulation, etc. And I don't have any money to spend. Any suggestions? I've seen GIMP which seems to be very powerful but also seems to have a high learning curve? Anything simpler.Thanks for any suggestions you can...
