French Beaded Flowers

Updated on May 30, 2014

Beaded Flowers

The art of beading flowers using wire andĀ delicate beadsĀ is one which is thought to date back as far as the 15th century, specifically to Venice where skilled craftsmen produced glass beads in quantity. It is thought Venetian women of more limited means would craft these beads into wire and bead flower sculptures, bouquets, wreaths, table arrangements and other floral works of art to make their living.

Later in the 1800's this craft became highly popular in France where these beaded flower arrangements were said to be used to decorate tombstones and gravesites before the Victorian era brought ladies of leisure across Europe to the craft of beading wire flowers where they were used for everything from personal adornment in the form of brooches, hat-pins etc. to home decoration. Recent years have seen a resurgence in the popularity of this simple yet elegant craft with many books and how-to manuals being written on the subject and advice and information sites appearing across the internet. Hopefully, some of the resources listed here can help you get started with flower beading with wire and you will soon take up this artful hobby.

In case you were wondering just what kind of stunning designs are possible to create using this wonderful craft then be sure to wander on over to Boa's Botanicals for a beautiful gallery of French beaded flower bouquets and arrangements.
