Updated on June 19, 2013

Choosing a Good Sewing Machine for a Beginner

Any beginner sewer will always want to buy a basic Sewing Machine which will serve them without any hiccups. As a beginner you want to buy a basic sewing machine, avoid buying machines that are so expensive and complicated to use. This is important in your early days as a sewer, given that you are yet to decide whether to become a full-time sewer or not. You may not want to spend lots of money in buying one of the most expensive Sewing Machine Table in the market. You could end up a frustrated person because it will, for sure, bring some complications to you especially on how to use it. These kinds of machines are meant for experienced and professional sewers. Being a beginner, not well conversant with how to use it, you could end up damaging it. If this is a machine you had broken the bank to acquire, it will really be so heartbreaking. Make sure to understand all the basics on how to use it before you start using any beginner sewing machine, or any sewing machine for that matter. You may want to borrow from a friend and let them guide you on how to use their machine. That way you will be in good position to decide the kind of a sewing machine table to buy.

Quick Advice to Beginner Sewers

Try as much as you can to learn how to use a sewing machine before committing your money to buying a new one. Ask a friend to help you with theirs, so you can use. If you cannot find one, then you might want to hire it from someone else, not necessarily someone close to you.

Quality versus Price

Which way to go?

I am sure nobody would ever want to buy a poor quality product. I, too, do not recommend you to buy cheap and low quality machine because you will never enjoy using it. It will be out of order before you even start using. It is also not good for beginners because most of them are kind of ambiguous to use. These kinds of machines only require an experienced user; one who knows how to find their way around any sewing machine available.

Don't get me wrong, I do not mean that you should go for an expensive sewing machine. No! What I mean is that you need to balance between the price and quality of that machine you want to acquire. Any beginner sewer will only want a basic machine, just to help them in making that decision on whether to continue sewing or not. Therefore, what you should do is go for a high quality, cheaply made sewing machine.

The Number of Stitches for a Sewing Machine

Is it Really worth Considering?

As a beginner, you will only want two types of stitches i.e. zigzag stitch and the straight stitch. Every machine has a straight stitch. However, old machines might not be having the zigzag stitch. Buy a machine with these two basic stitches, don't allow yourself to be guided by the number of stitches available because you will never use all of them.

An experienced sewer can however choose to buy a sewing machine having more two stitches. The number of stitches that a machine can differ greatly but most machines have more than twenty stitches. Most of them are however rarely used yet it is good for variety, many stitches allows you to come up with unique dresses.

This is an example of a 2-stitch sewing machine, its brand new;

This will therefore ensure that you upgrade in performance tremendously.

Computerized Versus Mechanical Sewing Machine

Advances in technology have resulted in the making of computerized sewing machines. It would be a good idea for experienced users to use such machines but beginners. Computerized sewing machines can make your work quite easy given that most of the work you could have done manually have all been computerized. However, as a beginner you may just want to go for the simple mechanical sewing machine, which has the basic functions that you may need to start you off in your career. For experienced users however, consider buying computerized sewing machines. They can actually be good for adventure.

      @anonymous: Thanks for the lovely comment cmoneyspinner. I agree with you totally but you see, we still have a good number of us who are still old-school and we must not leave them behind after all the high-tech guys started from there. Anyways thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

      Brother sewing machines are great for beginners if you're old school. But if you're into high tech, that computerized Singer might be the way to go. Either way, sewing is a good skill to have. You can skip over knitting and crocheting, but knowing how to sew can truly keep clothes on your back. Three features that are important to me? Hemming, button holes and zippers. If the machine makes those three tasks easy for me to do, I'll buy it! :)
