You'll love making beautiful butterflies using old calendar pages. And you'll enjoy showing the kids how to make them this particular calendar craft too.

Every year its the same thing. The year is ended and I have an outdated calendar with beautiful pictures and I can't bear to discard it. In other words I have quite a few outdated calendars on hand and I decided it was time to find something to do with the pictures other than make envelopes out of them.

Not long ago I added a Butterfly Sun Catchers project to my Kids & Glitter elementary art blog and that made me think about using calendar pages. So, this article is about how to make beautiful calendar page butterflies.I think you'll agree that it is the best calendar page butterfly on the internet and probably the only one.

Supplies Needed:

Calendar pictures

Cardboard

Butterfly (Pattern)

Glue sticks

Scissors

Glue dots

Black or Colored Sharpies

1. Make a Pattern

Print off the butterfly pattern and make a cardboard template to make it easier to work with. I cut off the antennae for this project. Cereal boxes work great for making craft templates, especially if you are anticipating making a number of items. In this case, calendar butterflies.

2. Choose a Calendar Picture

The calendars with flowers work really well for making butterflies. Cut a strip large enough to double.I especially like the shiny surfaced calendar pages for making the butterflies, but the pages of any calendar will do.

3. Glue the Strip

Fold the strip in half and using a glue stick, adhere the sides together. This makes a two sided butterfly. Glue sticks work really well with this project. Make sure the glue covers the entire area where you'll be tracing your butterfly.

4. Trace Around the Template

Trace the butterfly shape onto the doubled calendar picture strip. Carefully cut out the butterfly.

5. Butterfly Images

6. Draw Designs in the Wings

With a marker, draw the body shape of the butterfly and fill in. Draw designs in the butterfly wings. Or go to Butterfly Sun Catchers for design ideas. Bend the wings up on each side of the body. Imagine all the unique markings on butterflies.

7. Three Calendar Pages

The top right butterfly if from the example calendar page. I think these are beautiful and so easy to make.

8. Another Calendar

This calendars pictures were smaller, scenery photos.I cut the picture so, doubled, that the template would fit. It is amazing to see what beautiful butterflies you can make with just any picture.

9. Display Butterflies

I attached glue dots to the back of the butterfly bodies so I could display the butterflies on a mirror. It's okay if the markings on both sides of the butterfly aren't exactly the same.

10. Beautiful Calendar Butterflies

Other ideas for using these butterflies would be: make a mobile, use one to fancy up a gift box, glue dot them to a window, attach a butterfly to a skewer or wire and use it as a plant pick. I'm sure you'll be able to think up even more uses for them.

A very good idea for spending an afternoon and using old calendars. All the scraps of paper can go in a compost bin and everything is nicely back in its place.
