Best flash for the Canon eos 7d reviewed and compared

Updated on April 5, 2013

Flash for the Canon 7d to improve your flash photography

The Canon eos 7d has a built in flash that "pops up" when needed, however it really is not that good. The inbuilt flash in the eos 7d is adequate to provide a little extra light when you need it, however it really isn't that good nor is it powerful.

If you really want to do some flash photography you are going to need an external flash gun, i.e. one that fits in the hot shoe of your eos 7d. There are loads of different external flash guns available and choosing the right one can be a real head ache and a painstaking exercise, even though it shouldn't be.

If you want to buy the best flash for the Canon eos 7d you need to check out the flash guns included in this lens, all of which are great purchases.

Best flash for the Canon eos 7d - Canon Speedlite 580EX II

If you want the best, biggest and the most powerful Canon branded flash gun currently available then look no further than the Canon 580EX. This is the daddy of external flash guns and it is an awesome piece of kit. The 580EX has a guide number of 58 which means it has a range of 58m at ISO100, which makes it a very powerful flash that more than man enough for most situations.

The 580EX is tough, durable and very sturdy which means it can withstand daily use and abuse. This flash gun is also weather-sealed, i.e. dustproof and waterproof, so you can use it in all weather conditions.

If you are new to flash photography you can use the Canon 580EX in full automatic mode which means your camera and the flash will set everything up for the correct exposure, and it does this very well. Fully automatic mode is also useful for those situations where you don’t have the time to manually set the flash but you want to ensure the flash is set correctly so you don’t miss the shot.

You can also use the 580EX in manual mode and this is where you get to see just how good a flash gun this is. Setting up the flash is confusing at first so you need to be prepared to spend some time reading the user manual and experimenting. Once you get the hang of how everything works it all makes sense and becomes intuitive though.

As you have probably guessed the Canon 580EX is not cheap but then what do you expect for a professional bit of kit from Canon? If you have the need for such a powerful flash gun and can afford to buy the Canon 580EX then go for it as you will not be disappointed.

Best flash for the Canon eos 7d - Canon speedlite 430EX

Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash for Canon Digital SLR Cameras Bulk Packaging (White Box, New)

All Canon branded accessories are known for being exceptional quality and the 430EX is no different. The 430EX is a professional grade flash gun that is tough, durable and capable of taking a lot of abuse. The hot shoe foot is metal and there is a tight locking mechanism. The 430 EX really is a strong product that will provide years of trouble free service.

The Canon 430EX has a guide number of 43, which means a range of 43m at ISO 100. This makes it more than powerful enough for most situations you are going to come across. One thing to note about this flash gun is the fast recycle times, which means the flash is ready for use exceptionally quickly.

The Canon 430EX can be used in full automatic mode, which is great for those new to flash photography since it calculates the amount of power needed to correctly expose the photograph, and it does this very well. Full automatic mode is also useful for candid shots and photojournalism when you simply don’t have the time to take test shots and manually set the flash for the best exposure.

The 430EX also has full manual control which allows you to set the flash for the lighting set up you want. The controls on the 430EX are confusing to begin with but they soon become clear after taking a few test shots, so you will be up and running in no time at all.

If you want the build quality and features of the 580EX but don’t have the cash available to buy the 580EX the 430EX is the next best thing. Similarly, if you don’t need the power or 58m range of the 580EX the 430EX will be the best flash gun for you.

Best flash for the Canon eos 7d - Canon speedlite 270EX

Canon 270EX II Speedlite Flash for Canon SLR Cameras (Black)
Canon 270EX II Speedlite Flash for Canon SLR Cameras (Black)

The Canon 270EX is a neat flash gun. Like all Canon branded accessories it is a top quality product that is tough, durable and very well made. It is not weatherproof, but given it is not really an outdoor specific flash gun this fact really doesn’t matter. The 270EX has a guide number 0f 27, which means it has a range of 27m at ISO100 which is perfect for interior shots of the family, kids, pets etc.

The 270EX is small, compact and lightweight so it is a fantastic flash for those people who don’t like too much bulk and like to travel light. Some flash guns seem bulky and make the camera too top heavy, however this is not the case with the 270EX, and everything just seems nice and balanced.

Some people simply don’t need the power of the Canon 580EX or the 430EX and this is the best flash gun for these people. The 270EX doesn’t have the range of features the 430EX or the 580EX has, but given this flash is aimed at people who just want a decent flash gun to take indoor photos of their family this really doesn’t matter.

Compared to other flash guns with the same guide number the 270EX is expensive, however it is a top quality flash gun that is definitely worth spending the extra on.

So, if you want a small and compact flash and don’t need the power of the 430EX or the 580EX this is an excellent flash gun and one you need to take a look at. You won’t be disappointed.

Nissin ND622MKII-C Speedlite Di 622 Mark II Flash System for Canon (Black)

For a little over two hundred bucks the Nissin Di622 is a great flash gun for those people who cannot justify shelling outs loads of money on Canon branded flash guns. The Nissin is a small but powerful flash gun that is well made. The Nissin is not as tough and durable as the Canon branded flash guns but it is more than tough enough for normal use.

The Nissin can be used in automatic modes, ideal for those new to flash photography, and full manual mode, which allows you to be more creative and fully manipulate the lighting. The Nissin also has through the lens metering technology that will help you get perfect exposures each and every time.

Overall the Nissin Di622 MkII is a cracking flash gun that is well worth looking at if you can’t afford or don’t want to buy the Canon branded flash guns.
