Choosing the best lens for Canon 7d

If you are looking for the best lens for Canon 7d you have come to the right place. The Canon 7d is an awesome digital camera and with its high 18MP resolution sensor and stupidly fast burst rate of 8fps, it is the perfect tool for sports and wildlife photography for the enthusiast. In an ideal world we would have Canon's flagship eos 1DX but with a price tag of several thousand dollars few of us have the spare cash to buy one, and the Canon 7d is an affordable alternative.

Since the Canon 7d is built for wildlife and sports/action photography the best lens for Canon 7d is a lens that is best suited to this type of photography. So what is an ideal wildlife/sports lens? What is the best lens for Canon 7d? If you want to find out what the best les for Canon 7d is then please check out the digital camera lenses below, all of which are top quality.

Best lens for Canon 7d - 70mm - 200mm zoom Canon lens review

I have used the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses on my Canon 7d since day one, and I rate them so highly I thought a quick Canon lens review on all of the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses has to be included.

If you can get close to the action or subject one of the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses is ideal and should help you capture the type of images you are after. The 70mm - 200mm zoom lens is a popular lens and it is one that all photographers should have in their kit bag. I have been fortunate enough to have used many different brands of 70mm - 200mm zoom lenses and, in my opinion, the best for Canon 7d are the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses.

There are four different 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses, all of which are awesome. All of the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses are made out of the best materials and components, all of them have superior glass and all of them are weather sealed. If you buy any of the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses for your Canon 7d you can be sure of pin sharp images that are bright and vivid, but not oversaturated, and true to life. The images you can capture with one of the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses are simply stunning.

Canon 70 - 200 f2.8L IS USM

Out of all the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses the 70mm - 200mm f28L IS USM is the best lens for Canon 7d in the range. The problem is, however it is the most expensive. Compared to the other 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses this model is a big and heavy beast, so you need to take this in to account before buying one. This Canon lens is perfect for all types of sports, both indoor and outdoor as well as photographing wildlife in low light conditions. The 2.8 maximum aperture ensures you can keep the shutter speeds high without having to push the ISO too far, and the image stabilization technology allows you to ensure tack sharp images time and time again. All in all the Canon 70mm - 200mm f2.8L IS USM lens is an awesome lens and if you can afford to buy one then you will soon realize this is the best of the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses in the range,

Canon 70 - 200 f2.8L USM

Next in the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses line up we have the Canon 70mm - 200mm f2.8L USM lens. This lens is the same as the lens above but without the image stabilization technology. Image stabilization technology is heavy so without it, this lens is lighter than the lens above, which some people may prefer. Is this the best lens for Canon 7d? The answer to this depends. If you want a wide maximum aperture and can do without the image stabilization this lens could be the best lens for Canon 7d. If you can't make do without the image stabilization technology but can't afford the lens above, this is unlikely to be the best lens for Canon 7d. Regardless, this model of the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses is awesome and since it is so versatile may photographers consider this the best lens for Canon 7d.

Canon 70 - 200 f4L IS USM

Next in the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses line up is the Canon 70mm - 200mm f4L IS USM. This lens has a maximum aperture of f4 and image stabilization technology. This lens obviously isn't as fast as the other two but it does have image stabilization, which is a really cool feature. This lens is lighter and less cumbersome than the f2.8L lenses, and many photographers like this weight saving. Using the Canon f4L IS USM lens for indoor photography or outside photography in low light conditions does present some problems to overcome but the low light capabilities of the Canon 7d is very good so you can really push the ISO without affecting image quality too much. So, is the f4L IS USM lens the best lens for Canon 7d?

Out of all the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses I would have to say the f4L IS USM lens is the best lens for Canon 7d in my opinion. The maximum f4 aperture can be restrictive at times but there is always something you can do to get around the issue. The f4L IS USM lens is affordable and is the best compromise between cost and features. The Canon f4L IS USM is the best value for money and gives the most bang for the buck, and it is this reason why I believe the Canon f4L IS USM lens is the best of the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses of all time.

Canon 70 - 200 f4L USM

The last of the 70mm - 200mm Canon l sereis lenses is the Canon 70mm - 200mm f4L USM lens. This lens is like the lens above, only it doesn't have image stabilization. As you'd expect this lens is the cheapest of the 70mmm - 200mm Canon l series lenses, but don't let this put you off buying one.

The image quality of this lens is simply superb and it is tack sharp from the centre of the frame to the edges. Colors are bright and vivid but not oversaturated, which is pretty cool. This lens is great value for money and idea if you are on a budget or simply don't need a 2.8 maximum aperture and image stabilization. So, if money is a deciding factor and you want one of the 70mm - 200mm Canon l series lenses, this is the model to buy.

Best lens for Canon 7d - Third party branded 70mm - 200mm zoom lenses

In my opinion a Canon branded 70mm - 200mm zoom lens is the best lens for Canon 7d out of camera lenses in this focal length, however they are also the most expensive. If you are on a budget or can't justify the premium cost of canon branded lenses there are other 70mm - 200mm zoom lenses by other manufacturers, i.e. third parties.

The third party 70mm - 200mmm zoom lenses are good and capable of capturing some great images, but are they the best lens for Canon 7d? I don't think so. That said, there are many happy third party lens users so they aren't too bad.

For some of the best, and most popular third part 70mm - 200mm zoom lenses check out the lenses below.

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG HSM OS FLD Large Aperture Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital DSLR Camera
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG HSM OS FLD Large Aperture Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital DSLR Camera

Sigma are considered to the best third party brand by many photographers, and when you take a look at their lenses it is easy to see why. This is a top quality lens that is well worth looking in to.

Minolta Maxxum AF 70-210mm F/4 Telephoto Zoom Lens FOR SONY ALPHA
Minolta Maxxum AF 70-210mm F/4 Telephoto Zoom Lens FOR SONY ALPHA

Another lens worth looking at is this one made by Minolta. Minolta lenses are not as popular as Sigma and Tamron but this doesn't mean they are no good.

Canon 100mm - 400mm f4.5 - 5.6L IS USM lens

I have a real passion for sports photography so I thought a sports Canon lens review was needed for this this article.

One of the best sports and action Canon l series lenses is the Canon 100mm - 400mm f4.5 - 5.6L IS USM lens. In fact I rate this lens so highly I would consider this the best lens for canon 7d of all time. The 100mm - 400mm is an affordable, unlike most of the other telephoto Canon l series lenses, and this is one of the reasons it is such an attractive lens to own.

Like all of the Canon l series lenses the 100mm - 400mm telephoto lens is made out of superior components, therefore it is tough, durable and built to last. It also has the best optics so the image quality is simply awesome. The 100mm - 400mm isn't particularly fast but the maximum aperture is fine in good light. When the light starts to fade the image stabilization is very useful to make sure all shots remain tack sharp.

The Canon 100 - 400 is the most versatile of the Canon l series lenses and the push/pull zoom means you can quickly zoom in or out to ensure you get the type of shot you want. The push/pull focusing takes a bit of getting used to but it won't take too long to master, and when you do you will soon realize it is quicker than the standard twist focusing systems found in other lenses.

If you want the best of the sports Canon l series lenses, and can only own one telephoto lens for your Canon 7d make sure it is the 100mm - 400mm as this really is the best Canon 7d lens currently available.

Best lens for Canon 7d - Wide angle lenses

Even though the Canon 7d is best suited to sports and action photography it can be used for all subjects

If you want to use your Canon 7d for landscape photography you are going to need a wide-angle lens to capture those sweeping landscapes and seascapes. When buying a wide-angle lens for the Canon 7d you have to remember the 1.6x crop factor. Canon's best wide-angle landscape lens of choice is the 16mm - 35mm f2.8L USM lens but when you take the crop factor in to account this is an effective 26mm - 56mm focal length, which isn't super wide at all. If you want a true super wide-angle lens for the canon 7d the best lens for Canon 7d is the EF-S 10mm - 22mm, which has an effective focal length of 16mm - 35mm.

Canon EF-S 10m - 22mm wide angle lens

The EF-S 10mm - 22mm is an awesome lens and is capable of capturing some awesome images. Even though the EF-S 10mm - 22mm isn't an L series lens, it is tough, durable and very well made and the image quality is simply awesome. The EF-S 10mm - 22mm isn't a fast lens, but when taking landscape images you use a tripod and shoot at narrow apertures, so this really isn't a problem.

If you want the best lens for Canon 7d for landscape and seascape images I highly recommend the Canon EF-S 10mm - 22mm lens. Get one of these and you won't be disappointed.

Best lens for Canon 7d - Macro lenses

With its high burst rate the Canon 7d is also a great camera for taking macro and close up images of insects and mini beasts. When taking images of insects you need the lens that offers the greatest working distance, i.e. greatest distance between the end of the lens and the subject, and the best lens for Canon 7d for macro photography is the Canon EF100mm f2.8L IS USM.

Canon 100mm f2.8L IS macro USM lens

This is lens is an L series lens, which means it is made out of superior components and contains the best optics. The 100mm f2.8L IS USM macro lens is a 100mmm prime lens that is super sharp. In fact, many photographers consider this the sharpest of all Canon lenses, and when you look at images captured with this lens it is easy to see why. The Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM macro lens has image stabilization technology to help keep camera shake at bay, and it works exceptionally well.

If you want the best lens for Canon 7d for capturing macro images of insects this is the lens to buy. Whilst it is a bit on the expensive side it is worth every cent.
