Best Pens For Left-Handed Writers

Updated on February 19, 2012

Not all pens are good for left-handers

Every lefty has a story about the nightmare pen. Turning in papers covered in ink blotches. Left hands covered in ink. Yes, being left-handed makes what should be a mindless purchase challenging.

It is even more important to find a good pen for a left-handed person if, like me, you write across the page. I was not taught to hook my hand while writing, or to underwrite. Instead, my hand goes across the words I just wrote. This makes quick drying ink essential.

Here are some highly recommended pens for lefties. These pens have been judged by left-handed people as being among the best left-handed pens.

My #1 Pick - Pilot EasyTouch

The pen I have settled on is the Pilot EasyTouch, with fine-point. In my experience, the Pilot EasyTouch always writes smoothly. My page stays smudge-free no matter how fast I'm writing, and so does the side of my left hand. It is also inexpensive and easy to find at stores.

The Uniball Jetstream 101

The ink in the Uniball Jetstream 101 pens has been designed to dry quickly and embed itself in the actual fibers of the paper you are writing on. This is attractive as a security mechanism to prevent things like checks being altered. There is nothing more attractive to a leftie than fast drying ink. Users say the Jetstream's ink dries in literally one second.

The Fisher Space Pen

This pen was designed for astronauts to be able to use in zero gravity. By definition, left handed people write differently than their right handed counterparts. When a right handed person writes, the pen is being pulled across the paper. When a left handed person writes, the pen is being pushed across the paper. Which do you think is easier on getting ink to flow smoothly? Users love this pen for its ability to write in unconventional positions, such as overhead. Keep in mind the bullet version of the pen is a compact version, and not full size.

The Yoropen

The Yoropen is ergonomic and designed to be user friendly for both lefties and righties. The ergonomic tip can be adjusted to personal comfort. Users love its comfort and find less writing fatigue using it.

The Pilot G2

A lot of lefties do like this gel ink pen. They clearly are overwriters and underwriters. I have yet to find a gel ink that my hand does not make into nifty stamping designs.

I am right handed but I guess I write across the text somehow because I wind up with ink all over the side of my hand when I write a lot. It must be from the row above that I just wrote. So these quick-drying pens might actually be a good choice for me and not just my left-handed sister. Thanks for the info!
