Updated on November 22, 2014

How To Choose a Sewing Machine for Kids

Knowing how to choose the best sewing machine for kids is so important because if you don't get a good quality machine you could end up with aggravation that could kill your child's desire to sew.One of the common problems with some sewing machines is thread breaking. If it is constantly breaking thread and skipping stitches your child will likely want to give up this hobby quickly. So consider your options and remember that sometimes only a few dollars stand between kids loving a new hobby and never wanting to attempt it again. Having a machine that is giving you and your kids problems every few minutes will have you ready to quit before you every get the opportunity to enjoy it.

As someone who started sewing years ago, I know first hand how important it is for beginners to take it slow and never tackle something that is too big or difficult. Doing so will end with children having a bad experience and it could discourage them ever wanting to try it ever again. So keep things simple until they get the hang of it and make sure you get a machine that works good. Both of these aspects are essential to a good outcome which is kids loving this hobby and carrying that love with them into adulthood.

How Sewing Can Be Beneficial To A Child's Future

There are a lot of benefits that can come from passing along the love of sewing to your children. It will help them develop more self confidence, spark creativity and learning this skill can help them out during a tough financial time that could possibly come their way in the future.

This is the reason I started sewing many many years ago. Having young children can put a strain on the budget and I had to figure out a way to help make ends meet. After all I wanted to be a stay at home mom and that meant making some adjustments. Learning how to sew would help me achieve that. I started making all of my kids clothes myself. So I know how much this can help for your child's future if they learn to love this hobby at an early age. This is something that they will benefit from for the years ahead of them.

Not only did I learn to sew clothes, I was making everything in the home that required fabric. Placemats, chair cushions, and curtains, just to name a few. So when you think about it, it is a very helpful hobby to teach your kids.

Beginner Sewing Machine Great for Kids

I have personally had a lot of experience with sewing on this brand machine. I bought my first Brother sewing machine over 15 years ago and it still works to this day. I think it is one of the best lower end machines available. It has enough features to allow you to have fun and be creative without getting too complicated. This will have more stitch options than my Brother has so I know you will love that. Making buttonholes is a nice option, but it is highly unlikely that children will need that feature for a while. It is however, good to have it when you are ready for it. That is one of the reasons I have so many machines now, because back when I started sewing there weren't many features added to one single machine. Luckily you can get more stitches all in one machine at a fraction of the price today.

Kid's Beginner Sewing Machine

From my experience of teaching two daughters how to sew, there are certain features that I learned really quick are a must have for me. Things like, does the machine have reverse stitching. I taught my girls to always back stitch at the beginning and at the end of all of their work. So without the reverse stitching ability, that would be impossible. The next important thing is to make certain that it comes with a built in light. Even young eyes can have a hard time seeing those tiny stitches, so the light helps with that tremendously. Without one built in to the sewing machine, you will be having to find a table lamp to set up next to the sewing project.. And lastly, foot pedals are a must. Just think of how much skill it takes to operate using hands and foot at the same time. This will develop coordination in your child that will help them in many ways. The machines below are ideal for young kids from 6 year old - adult. Older girls can be more successful with an even bigger machine, but bigger isn't necessary.

Starter Sewing Machine for Kids

Consider buying young children a mini machine that is intended for beginners, but not necessarily children. This can be a better choice if you supervise while kids are using it. There is much less frustration and the outcome is better. I would only do this for children 8 years old or older. You as the parent have to decide if your child is ready for this step. These smaller sewing machines have 2 speeds typically so you could use the slower setting and always use supervision.

When I first decided I wanted to start sewing, I had a difficult time knowing what sewing project was beginner friendly. If you don't know much about the hobby when you're starting out, believe me it isn't always clear to see how much work goes in to making somethings.

Some items look easy enough when you are starring at the end results, but they are often a bit tricky when it comes down to actually sewing them from start to finish. This is why I think having a book with beginner sewing projects is such a great idea. Professional's know what can be tackled with little frustration for those learning to sew. Having one of these books on hand will give you so many ideas to get you started off in the right direction.

Even those who have been sewing for years still find craft books handy for moving them forward to more difficult task. A good example would be making quilts. There are so many how-to-books on quilt making for the more advanced seamstress.

So throughout your sewing endeavors you will find that craft books are loaded with just the inspiration you need each step of the way. They are for kids with craft projects aimed at making things they can use and be proud of, while older beginners can get craft books that highlight useful projects for them.

You will know which one is right for you with no problem, because they tell you enough and show you examples of what can be made with the instructions inside. I still have the very first thing I ever made and that was many many years ago. Most people hang on to whatever they make, because it is so special to them. Years later it is fun to look back and see your work. It is also a good way to gauge just how far you've come with your sewing skills. So I highly recommend the craft sewing project books for ideas and easy to sew projects.
