Simple one color birdhouse with Design

One idea for painting a birdhouse is a simple one color design with some flowers, like in the video above. If you noticed, the birdhouse is no all flashy and hard on the eyes. Plus it is pretty simple to paint. All you need to do is "white wash" the birdhouse with white paint, let it dry. Then paint the roof either brown or black, in this case they chose brown.

After the paint is completely dried, simply take a small artist paint brush and a small amount of green paint and "draw" thin lines that look like either vines or plant stems. Now take some other colors and paint small flower petals in various locations on the stems or vines.

Watch video below to see how they did it.

There are bird house kits on the market that have everything you need to make a birdhouse. Well, you might need a hammer or a couple trivial hand tools.

Interesting Painted Birdhouse Designs

No right or wrong way to paint a birdhouse

There were some pretty neat ideas in that video. It just goes to show you that there are endless ways to paint a birdhouse. There is no right way or wrong way when it comes to the design you want to paint. That is probably one of the main reasons that making and painting birdhouses are in the top ten of projects to do with your kids. It's practically fail proof.

Decorative or Functional Bird House?

There are some guide lines you may want to consider if the bird house is to be a real functional birdhouse for wild birds.

Functional Bird House

It's good practice that anytime you are going to paint something that animals or children will be in physical contact with, you use a non-toxic water based acrylic paint.

Do not paint the inside of the birdhouse or the inner edge of the opening. This is to help insure there won't be any accidental ingesting if the babies peck at the inner walls.

Know before you paint where the birdhouse will be located. Will it be in direct sun or will it be in the shade? Depending on it's location you may have to stick with lighter colors.

Lighter colors reflect the heat so is best used if birdhouse will be located somewhere in a lot of sunlight. You do not want the inside of the birdhouse to over heat.

Use exterior satin finish instead of gloss finish.

If possible paint your birdhouse in such a way that it will help camouflage it so to be harder to spot by predators.

For In House Decorative Birdhouse

For decorative birdhouses the type of paint is not as critical, providing the birdhouse is placed out of the reach of children.

If you do place your decorative birdhouses outside please be sure to close off any form of entrance to the birdhouse. You can do this by simply opening up the birdhouse and nailing a piece of board across the inside of the opening and then closing up the birdhouse.

The weirdest thing I painted on a birdhouse was a kraken with its tentacles coming around front as if poised to grab the birdie coming out the door hole. It looked hilarious when the sparrow that took up residence would pop out its head and look around.
