The best Canon 5d lenses to help you get the most out of your Canon 5d
The best Canon 5d lenses will help you get the most out of your Canon 5d and improve your photographs - fact. But what are the best Canon 5d lenses and which ones should you spend your hard earned cash on?
The Canon 5d is an affordable full-framed digital SLR camera designed for professional photographers and enthusiasts alike. The 5d doesn't have a high burst rate therefore it is not the best option for sports/action photography or wildlife photography. However, if you intend to shoot subjects that don't move too fast the 5d is one of the best cameras you can buy, and that is why it is Canon's best selling digital slr camera of all time.
To get the most out of your Canon 5d you need awesome Canon 5d lenses but with so many to choose from buying the perfect Canon 5d lenses can be a bit of a headache, and when you consider the cost of Canon 5d lenses the decision becomes more difficult.
This article contains what I consider the essential Canon 5d lenses you need to cover all the situations you are likely to encounter. So, if you are going to buy some canon 5d lenses make sure you check out the following lenses before parting with your hard earned cash.
Canon 16mm - 35mm f2.8L USM
With its full frame sensor the Canon 5d is ideal for landscape photography, and if you have a passion for landscape photography one of the best Canon 5d lenses money can buy is the 16mm - 35mm f2.8L USM lens.
The 16mm - 35mm f2.8L USM lens is an L series professional grade lens, which mans it is made out of the best components, it is tough and durable, it is fully sealed and it
has superior optics. The image quality of the 16mm - 35mm lens is simply awesome and it is capable of capturing some stunning images. Images shot wide open, i.e. at f2.8, are a little soft however if you stop the lens down the sharpness improves and images are tack sharp. Soft images at the widest aperture is not a problem, after all how many landscape images are taken at f2.8? I seldom drop below f11 with landscape shots and there are no softness problems at this aperture at all.
The 16mm - 35mm f2.8L lens is a super wide angle lens that allows you to squeeze a lot in to the frame, making it perfect for those panoramic landscape and/or seascape shots. Many photographers complain that barrel distortion and pin cushioning occurs with zoom lenses, however I have not found this to be the case with the 16mm - 35mm f2.8L IS lens, and both are very well controlled and non-existent.
If you want the best of the landscape Canon 5d lenses I highly recommend the 16mm - 35mm f2.8L USM lens. Get one of these and you will not be disappointed with the images you capture with it.
Canon 24mm - 105mm f4L IS USM
Out of all of the Canon 5d lenses the best general and walkabout lens is the Canon 24mm - 105mm f4L IS USM lens, which is a zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f4 throughout the entire focal range. This is not a particularly fast lens but providing the light levels are ok this should not cause too many problems. Besides, the image
stabilization technology help to ensure that camera shake is eliminated as far as possible.
The 24mm - 105mm is a versatile lens that is perfect for travel photography, photo journalism and general photography. This lens is wide enough to capture so good landscape shots and also has enough of a zoom to get close to subjects that are a bit further away. The 24mm - 105mm is perfect if you only want to have one lens with you and not a whole collection of Canon 5d lenses.
Like all Canon 5d lenses that are L series the build quality of the 24mm - 105mm lens is second to none, and can only be described as bullet proof. The optics are superb and the image quality is great. This lens is capable of capturing some stunning images. The 24mm - 105mm is tack sharp, even when used wide open so images shot at f4 are tack sharp from the center to the sides.
If you only buy on of the best Canon 5d lenses in this line up it should be the 24mm - 105mm f4L IS USM.
Canon 70mm - 200mm zoom lens
The 70mm - 200mm zoom lens is a useful and versatile lens that all photographers should have in their kit bag. The 70mm - 200mm is another one of the Canon 5d
lenses that is worth buying. A 70mm focal length is not wide enough for a panoramic landscape/seascape but you can still capture some pretty decent images. The 70mm - 200mm zoom lens is perfect for portrait photography (both head and shoulder and full body), photo journalism and getting up close and personal to subjects that are far away.
There are four Canon branded Canon 5d lenses with a 70mm - 200mm focal length and these consist of the 70mm - 200mm f2.8L IS USM, 70mm - 200mm f2.8L USM, 70mm - 200mm f4L IS USM and 70mm - 200mm f4L USM. The only difference between the lenses is the maximum widest aperture and image stabilization technology.
The top end 70mm - 200mm is the f2.8L IS USM, but this is also the most expensive. As I am sure you have already guessed the f4L is the cheapest in the range. All of the 70mm - 200mm Canon 5d lenses are excellent lenses and worth buying and you should base the final decision on your specific requirements and, of course, your budget.
The 70mm - 200mm Canon 5d lenses are L series lenses which means they are tough, durable and built to last. They are also made out of superior optics and the image quality is simply superb. If you want the best 70mm - 200mm Canon 5d lenses you won't go wrong with any one of the Canon branded 70mm - 200mm zoom lenses.
Canon 50mm f1.2L USM
With its full frame sensor the Canon 5d is one of the best cameras for portrait photography, and this is what many photographers use it for. If you intend to use your Canon 5d for portrait photography there are a few Canon 5d lenses you can choose from but the ultimate is the Canon 50mm f1.2L prime lens.
A 50mm prime lens is the perfect focal length for portrait and fashion photography and it is a lens you should definitely have in your kit bag. The 50mm f1.2L is an L series
lens, which means it is a professional grade lens.
The image quality of this lens is simply awesome and you won't be disappointed with any portrait shots taken using this lens. With a wide maximum aperture of f1.2 this lens is perfect for both indoor and outdoor use, as well as for low light photography. Shooting at f1.2 allows you to capture a tack sharp subject against a nicely blurred out background, which will make the subject "pop". This lens is super sharp, even when used wide open at f1.2 and you won't experience any softness whatsoever.
If you want the best of the 50mm focal length portrait Canon 5d lenses available the Canon 50mm f1.2L USM should be top of your shopping list. Compared to other 50mm prime lenses the 50mm f1.2L is expensive but it is worth every cent.
Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM Macro
With its full frame sensor the Canon 5d makes an excellent camera for macro photography. If you have a passion for close up and macro photography and want the best of the macro Canon 5d lenses the 100mm f2.8L IS USM macro lens is the lens to buy.
This 100mm prime lens is a bit soft at f2.8 but once stopped down it is ultra sharp. In fact, many photographers consider it the sharpest of the Canon 5d lenses of all and I have to say I totally agree. A little softness at f2.8 won't cause any problems whatsoever because using a 2.8 aperture for macro photography won't work because the depth of field is just too slight. As I am sure you have already guessed the image quality of this lens is stunning. Colors are bright and vivid but not oversaturated and the sharpness is something else.
With a 100mm focal length this lens offers a good working distance, i.e. distance
between the subject and the end of the lens, which makes it perfect for capturing macro images of insects and mini beasts. The image stabilization technology also helps to capture sharp handheld shots of insects and mini beasts. The Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM macro lens doubles up as a great portrait lens and general walkabout lens as well.
Like all L series lenses this lens is bullet proof and made out of the best materials and components, which you'd expect. If you want the best of the macro Canon 5d lenses the 100mm f2.8L IS USM lens is definitely the lens to buy. The 100mm f2.8 is a quality lens but the 100mm f2.8L IS USM simply blows it out of the water.
