Chinese New Year Crafts for Kids

Updated on October 11, 2014

Chinese New Year Crafts for Children

Need some Chinese New Year kids crafts? I have a variety of craft ideas including dragon, lantern, mask, goldfish and fan crafts.

Enjoy a cute Chinese New Year song while you're here and learn a bit of trivia associated with some of the crafts.

There's lots to keep kids crafting and happy. Are you ready to get started? We're not Chinese, but I know how much my kids love the parades and activities.

Chinese New Year Dragon Mask Craft

Dragons are very popular symbols associated with Chinese New Year. Among other things, they are said to bring good luck.

Click the link below to print out a free dragon mask template. Once printed, kids can color and decorate it before putting it on.

Paper Plate Dragon Craft

Print out this dragon image for kids to color. Next, cut out the image and place it in the middle of a white paper plate.

Now, let kids decorate the rest of the paper plate by coloring it, adding Chinese stickers, feathers or any other decorations you like.

Punch a whole at the top of the plate and run some yarn through it to make it hang-able. Now, children can hang up their new dragon ornament.

Chinese New Year Song for Kids

Here's a song for you to enjoy while you're here. I have absolutely no idea what the kids are saying, but it's such a cute sounding song.

This is a pretty basic craft for kids, although adult supervision is still recommended. For any who are not familiar with Chinese symbols, I think think this makes for a fun introduction.

Chinese New Year Collage

Using a poster board, get everyone together to find pictures, clipart, etc. to create a photo collage for Chinese New Year.

Glue everything onto the poster board and have kids decorate whatever room is left. If possible, let them know what an important holiday time this is for the Chinese people.

Goldfish Crafts

In the Chinese culture, goldfish are said to bring about prosperity and wealth. Here are some fun crafts for kids to help start off with a successful new year.

Chinese New Year Activity Book

This is a really good book for kids. It's filled with fun craft projects, while at the same time information so kids can learn more about Chinese New Year.

How to Make a Chinese Fan

Although initially it may seem like a Chinese fan is a way to cool off during the hot summer months, it is much more than that. It is an important piece of Chinese art.

It is believed that the folding fan originated in Japan, but this is speculative. No matter it's origins, these fans are used to help celebrate Chinese New Year. Check out the link below for a folding fan craft link.

I don't celebrate Chinese New Year, but I am thinking to start new tradition. Who could resist two New Year's celebrations anyway?

Chinese New Year is about a month from now. Will be ushering in the Year of the Snake. There are lots of Chinese New Year decorations available for sale where I live although kindergartens will usually get the kids to make related crafts during that time.
