Clothing Design Software for Fashion Designers (CAD)

Updated on July 1, 2018

Vintage fashion is my hobby because I am fashion conscious and try to be unique. My personal signature? Wearing vintage-inspired apparel.

Clothing design software interface.
Clothing design software interface.

There are a good number of fashion and clothing design software programs you will find today and they range from the free software for beginners to the more pricey and professional software like Adobe Illustrator, Autodesk, and EDraw Max.

Whether you are an aspiring fashion designer trying to realize your dreams, a design teacher, or even a professional fashion designer, you will find that using CAD software will help you accomplish your design objectives, even if you don’t possess much fashion designing, sketching, or dressmaking skills.

Clothing design software programs possess various components that not only work perfectly together but also helps designers expand their creativity way beyond what they can imagine. In other words, no matter what you may imagine or envision, you can create incredibly realistic fashion design illustrations and presentations that will convey your style and truly represent your fashion vision, without any constraints or limitations.

Clothing design software will teach you how to expand your creative dimensions while at the same time help you develop great skills and potentials with the aid of professional fashion illustrations above and beyond the fashion industry’s standards.

Clothing Design Software - Beginners

In all honesty, a beginner designer doesn’t need more than this. A free download, for a start, helps to familiarise you with the average design software interface. It also shows you how to handle challenging learning curves.

Basically, free fashion design software programs introduce a first time user to how fashion design software works. However, it will soon get to a stage where a fashion designer needs more than the basics. There will eventually be a need for more varied components like art and graphics, design templates, digital fabrics, techniques, and other advanced design tools.

Fashion Design Programs - Software for Professionals

If you are a fashion designer, in the process of enrolling into fashion design school, or wish to upgrade your design skills, you are better off buying a paid version for the download of fashion design software.

With a more professional paid version, you’ll have an edge over both beginners and stagnant fashion designers who still do it the conventional way.

With a more professional program, packed with cutting-edge technology, you can develop and create your own clothing line. And once you master the inroads, you can work:

  • Full-time for fashion design and merchandising companies where you can work the in-house designer
  • As a freelance fashion designer which can constitute a part of an apparel design team.
  • As a seller of unique designs and fashion illustrations to fashion houses, retailers, custom clothes makers, or clothing manufacturers. You can set up your own label and market your creations to them.

What CAD Fashion Software Is Recommended?

The best type of software to use will always depend on your personal needs and requirements.

For instance, if you just want to play around with designing clothing and other types of apparel, it’s good to go with a free download like EDraw Max which supports English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish languages.

If you plan to go more professional and even aspire to be a top-notch clothing designer, then I will recommend either Adobe Illustrator or Autodesk Sketchbook Pro. However, there are other great CAD programs for clothing design that you can consider, like CLO 3D and Wild Ginger Cameo (for professional patternmakers).

Many of the more professional software programs like Digital Fashion Pro, always offer free trial downloads.

Aspiring Career Fashion Designers

Welcome to the 21st century. Charles Frederick Worth, who in the 19th century was the first fashion designer to have his label sewn into the garments that he painstakingly created, should be smiling now.

At the click of a button and without the time and expense required to design, re-design and, ‘re-redesign' a new prototype, dressmaking would have been absolute fun. He’d never have to discard dresses and designs that didn’t work, a time-consuming and costly gesture.

And he’d never have to give up in exasperation after a series of failed designs.

What must have taken weeks and even months for him to create for his wealthy clients can now be achieved in a couple of hours at the most! Even his students will love this! Good thing that Fashion Design CAD has become one of the basic courses at most reputable fashion design schools today.

The fashion and clothing design industry will continue to rise albeit slowly. The US Department of Labour predicted a 5% increase in employment for fashion designers from 2006 to 2016. Today, it continues to rise slowly.

Most clothing design jobs will be found in design firms, and those making mass-produced clothing that appeals to a majority of consumers. Designs will be sold majorly to department stores and retail chain stores.

And with a proficient use of the clothing design software program, you will be able to view your designs on virtual models before you send them off to clients.

Great hub, these programs are all great. I've tried most of them and they work. Sometimes the color palettes are limited but that can easily be solved by designing your own swatches in a program like Photoshop. One word of warning though, when you attend school for fashion design, you will be expected to spend at least a year learning how to properly draw fashion illustrations by hand. They didn't start etting me use Vector, graphics, and CAD until my junior year.
