Baby Shower Tips From 1936

SEND FOR THE DOCTOR. He will come to this shower in the guise of a guest, arriving a little later than the others of the party and gotten up to look as much like a jolly, little, plump, country doctor of the old school as possible. He will convulse the guests with his line of conversation to the guest of honor and will finally conclude by prescribing his entire store of medicines, all of them to be taken in quick succession. The suitcase he presents to her will contain, of course, packaged gifts with amusing labels and sage advice. One such doctor presented instead a single gift to the mother; but what a gift! He gave her the bag he was carrying--a fitted bag for her to take to the hospital, into each pocket of which a guest had dropped a shiny new half-dollar with which she was to purchase something needed by the baby. If there have been other showers of bootees and jackets and bibs this will be a gift de luxe and greatly appreciated. ~Home Arts Needlecraft, January 1936

For the special little pardner

Don't forget, boots are a girl's best friend. Little princesses need boots, too. This pattern is so adorable I just had to share it. The spurs are what makes this one special.

I do crochet but I enjoy knitting better. I have a basket full of baby booties knit last summer. I knit bigger things in the winter so that as they grow and get longer they warm my knees. I have just finished a laprobe and now I'm starting on a baby blanket. I like to get a pattern that is a challenge. Everyone in my family know that they will be getting slippers or something knit from me for presents. It is nice for them and it is nice and relaxing for me. I enjoyed looking at the patterns here. Angel Blessings.

What is it about baby's feet and what we put on them that just makes us melt! Sweetness being served here for sure and I love that little extra tip from 1936, a half dollar was a lot of money in those days and boy...or girl, did they add up to some nice gifts!

Wow, you have hit on something special here. These are great for babies but I am wondering why not for older kids as slippers. Nice lens and topic

Oh, these are just tooooo cute!! I'm going to have to find someone with a baby to give them to! And then... um... give my mum the pattern and get her to make them lol. She loves crocheting, and I can only do chain... I can make a belt ;) I didn't know you could get cowboy booties - they really are gorgeous, and a fabulous idea for a baby shower!

I love these! Where I come from these are definitely a tradition...except the spurs...but after living in Texas for almost 30 years, that is just the cutest thing I have ever seen! Great job!

My baby girl just got pregnant with her first, and my husband and I couldn't be happier for her and her husband. I've been thinking about crocheting baby booties for the new baby, but I'm wondering how long it takes to learn how to do it? Anyone with experience in this area?
