Crochet Crafters Celebrate National Crochet Week

Updated on March 16, 2015

National Crochet Week Happens in the Second Week in March. Celebrate Creativity!

March is National Craft Month, so it's appropriate to have National Crochet Week included in March.

Crochet week is celebrated the 2nd week of March each year. The Crochet Guild of America (CGOA) declared this crochet week as part of National Craft Month. This is the only reference found for the reason we now have 'National Crochet Week!'

As a point of interest, the CGOA celebrated its 20 year anniversary last year in 2014. It began in 1994. Click on the link below for more information about the organization.

P.S. Us 'crochet crafters' don't have to wait for a national week to celebrate our creativity -- we do so every week of the year! :-)

Things you can do for National Crochet Week:

*Crochet for Charity

*Teach someone to crochet

*Experiment with a new fiber

What to do during National Crochet Week!

National Crochet Week is in March, so perhaps you'd like to crochet a few items for March events or holidays to stay in the mood this crochet week and craft month! Below are a few ideas other crochet crafters have come up with, plus some (free) patterns to try yourself! So, get out your crochet hook and yarn and give a few of these suggestions a try!

My Favorite Yarn for Crocheting...

My favorite yarn to use for my crocheted plush animals and Amigurumi characters is acrylic yarn, as it washes and dries beautifully, important when the crocheted item is for children. Amazon has lots of choices in skein sizes and brand names.

This is a 3-Skeins pack of acrylic yarn and each skein is 4-ounce or 203-yards.

Plump plush piglet is a round, roly-poly plush pet crocheted in the amigurumi style. I call her Penelope and she is a perfectly delightful Piglet, cute as she can be in her light pink coat with dark pink ears, nose and curly tail. She feels very stylish, in fact.

MY Crocheted Version of the Crafty Clam-on-the Half-Shell Shown Above...

Using pink yarn for the clam and burgundy yarn for the clamshell, I crocheted a Crocheted Clam in a Clamshell. The pattern of the Amigurumi Clam featured above is quick and easy to use. I'm delighted how cute mine turned out. :-)

Crochet Crafters Need the Basic Crochet Hooks - For Just About Any Craft Project

I crochet most of my plush animals with Size F/5 hook. When crocheting potholders or washcloths, I like to use Size G/6 or sometimes Size H. The larger sizes, particularly J and K, are often used for afghans.

This set of crochet hooks includes Sizes F, G, H, I, J, and K, giving you the size you need for most projects from plush animals to potholders to afghans.

Learn to Crochet Kit - Everything But the Yarn!

If you want to learn to crochet, this kit includes the basic essentials you need to get you started. Kit has five susan bates crochet hooks (US sizes f, g, h, i and j), one afghan hook, two yarn needles, and five yarn bobs. There is also an instruction book with simple instructions and clear diagrams for more than thirty projects to make learning easy. There are even instructions for the left-handed crafter (like me!)

I'm the same way, Brite-Ideas -- handmade blankets are great. I have an afghan I crocheted probably 20 years ago in a Navajo Indian design using Southwest colors and use it all winter long on my couch. It's still as sturdy as it was the day I made it. I also have handmade quilts my grandmother made - 2 of which are more than 50 years old! Nothing like handmade, in my opinion! :)

@flycatcherrr: Yep, there actually is a 'Clam on a Half Shell' Day (March 31st). One of those weird and wacky holidays. I'd have loved to have seen your crocheted kangaroos with clothes. How cute.

You got me with that crazy little clam on a half shell - too much fun! (Seriously, "Clam on the Half Shell Day" is a thing?)

I used to crochet tiny kangeroos (with a ridiculously extensive wardrobe to go with) but haven't done much with the hook for years. You're inspiring me to get back at it.
