How to Crochet a Bag

Updated on January 22, 2015

It's so easy, even beginners can do that!

On this page you can learn how to make a crochet bag with hearts. Instructions are intentionally made very simple so everybody can do it. You can make it for your little sister, daughter, mother or grandmother, ... With a pinch of imaginations you can personalize it a bit and It actually makes a nice thoughtful present for your dear ones.

With only few changes you can change bags in backpacks or other similar objects for carrying light objects as well. With all the colorful options only the sky is the limit.

Have a lot of fun.

You can find Pink Messenger Bag at Zazzle.com

I love crochet because it calms me down and it gives me so many possibilities to express my creativity. With few simple techniques you'll never be bored again!

How did I come up with idea to crochet a bag? Well, I was looking for a gift for my niece and I had no idea what to get her. (You probably know teenagers are the hardest to please.) All I knew was that I wanted something special and unique but not too expensive.

At first I only wanted to make very simple purple bag with little purple hearts. I already made one (you can see it bellow) and then I changed my mind and made another one in pink with light pink hearts.

Little hearts are really easy to make and they look quite nice, don't you think? Actually all patterns (bag and heart ) on this page are simple and easy to make, kids can do it, beginners can do it, and if you used to crochet and leave it for few years, you'll easily start again with these simple instructions.

I used very simple stitches and you can find instructions for bag and for hearts below.

You can learn how to crochet hearts from the video below, but for all of you who prefer written instruction there is a link to step by step instructions with a lot of photos.

And I hope you'll have a lot of fun creating your new bag with hearts. You don't need much to make a crocheted little bag, just a crochet hook and two different shades of pink yarn.

How to Crochet Tiny Hearts in 3 different sizes and variations

There are many variations...

In this video you can learn ho to make tiny hearts in different sizes. While the presentation is really clear, it may be too fast for beginners, so it is good to see it at full speed at first and than try to make your own hearts with stopping after every few seconds.

Let's start with our bag - As I promised it's going to be really easy.

Click thumbnail to view full-size
Start with Chain Stitch (ch). I made 26 chain stitches, that is approximately 4".All rows are half double crochet.I don't know exactly how many rows I made, but it was all together 12 inches.I fold it into little bag and made border, again half double crochet all the way.And it looks like a bag already. Now let's make a handle. It's about 11" long, and guess what, half double crochet all the way (5 ch) again. You can add cute little hearts too.And crocheted bag with hearts is done.Of course you can use any other color you like. Here you can see my purple bag with hearts.

Lovely lens, my Mum would have loved it too. 60 years ago she used to crochet toys. dolls clothes, teapot cosy's etc, all over the house. It was mandatory to inspect it admire all featuresand and understand the technique involved. This is a sweet memory of how much pleasure it gave her and others.
