Creative Cards: 40 Projects for Handmade Invitations, Greeting Cards, Gift Wrap and More

Product Description

Perfect for paper crafters, beginner and experienced.

Creative Cards is a how-to guide to turning plain paper into personalized and unique gift cards, boxes, bags, tags, and wrapping paper. The book shows how to transform plain paper into something special, and how to wrap a gift for a beautiful presentation.

The techniques section explains all the basics, such as using a bone folder, embellishing edges, choosing the right adhesive, working with 3-D decorations, stamping, gilding, die-cutting, and folding, with lots of how-to photographs.

Projects are suited to making a single card or large quantities, and are coded to indicate how long they may take to complete. Tip boxes offer handy pointers and there are ready-to-use templates at the back of the book plus a section on choosing and laying out text on a computer.

The step-by-step projects include: - Baby shower invitation - Birth announcement - Children's party invitation - Birthday card for a man - Wedding folder - 50th anniversary card - New home - Valentine - Halloween - Christmas card

For the occasional crafter or the experienced hobbyist, Creative Cards is rich with expert advice and colorful inspiration.

How to Make a Greeting Card

Making your own greeting cards can be both fun and rewarding. Many people cherish home-made greeting cards because they are a true expression of yourself and the person you are making it for.

The first step in making a greeting card is to determine who you are making the greeting card for. What interests does the person have? What is the person's hobbies? Is the person your friend, family member, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandparent, parent, husband, wife, or significant other?

The next step to making a greeting card is to decide if you want a funny greeting card or a sentimental greeting card. If you want a funny greeting card, you will want cut outs of cartoons, or you might want to draw your own cartoons. If you want a sentimental greeting card, you might gather cutouts of flower pictures. If you want a Christian greeting card, you might cut out some pictures of crosses or bibles. If you can draw your own, that's even better. But not everyone is an artist!

You also need to decide why you are sending the greeting card. Is it for a birthday, anniversary, thank you, sympathy, holiday, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, or other occasion? Maybe the greeting card is just because you care. If you want to send a birthday card, a picture of a birthday cake might be best. Or a picture of a flag for Independence Day greeting card would be nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good, March 9, 2001

By Meredith (Los Angeles, CA USA)

This review is from: Handmade Greeting Cards (Paperback)

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this book. The author introduced various techniques that were easy to reproduce (even for the childre I teach: from 3rd to 6th grade). The cards made, however, do not look simple or easy. I've made cards that ranged from whimsical to elegant using such techniques. A bonus is that you can learn to decorate plain paper rather than spending a lot of money buying the expensive specialty papers in craft supply stores. This book is truly inspirational. I had so many ideas (having made cards for a long time, I've become kind of dry) that I wanted to try out after reading this book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift or fun project guide!, December 17, 2008

By Erin E. Murphy (Oakland, CA United States)

This review is from: Handmade Hellos: Fresh Greeting Card Projects from First-Rate Crafters (Paperback)

I've loved Hello Lucky's cards for a long time, so when this book came out I was excited to steal some of their ideas to pass off as my own! It didn't disappoint. Even the book itself is a treat -- the binding is really easy to manage, and the templates in back are really helpful. I consider myself very low-level crafty skills-wise, but the descriptions and how-to really describes everything very clearly. This is a great gift for crafty friends, or a fun way to pass the afternoon and make unique and special invitations or cards on the cheap!

REMEMBER!

The only thing limiting your greeting card possibilities is your own creative mind!

What a unique lens - thanks for posting such great resources! It's also fun to mix handmade and digital methods when making cards, for example by using printable greeting cards to print a cover design and then using calligraphy, stamps or other methods to personalize the card.

I wish more people spent their money on handmade cards, and I hope that more people will start doing that. It keeps the money locally and supports independent card makers like ourselves, rather than supporting corporate/chain box stores and their "cookie-cutter" cards. Thanks for your interesting and informative lens.
