American Girl Doll Crafts

Updated on January 30, 2013

Make Crafts for your American Girl Dolls and Save Money!

Why buy it when you can make it? American Girl doll crafts are a great way to make accessories and clothing for a fraction of what American Girl charges. My daughters got caught up in the American Girl Doll craze a couple of years ago after we visited the Mall of America. The dolls are expensive to be sure, but I have found that they hold up much better to play than their less expensive counterparts. Soon after receiving their first AG dolls, my daughters started receiving the American Girl catalogs in the mail. They quickly started begging for furniture and accessories for their dolls. I was shocked at how pricey the accessories and furniture were! Since I am crafty, I decided that we would make them instead of buying them. I have discovered that with a little creativity and effort, you can make a ton of wonderful crafts for your American Girl Dolls at a fraction of the cost. My daughters and I love crafting together so making something for their dolls is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

I quickly discovered that there are all sorts of American Girl doll crafts on the internet - sewing, knitting, crocheting, plastic canvas, woodworking, paper crafts, you name it! No matter where your crafting interests lie, you will find a little something for everyone. Happy Crafting!

Sewing can be an economical way to get new clothes for your dolls. Most patterns work up fairly quickly and typically require less than a yard of fabric. They can be a great way to use up your stash! Small prints and solids work best for doll clothes.

If you are looking to teach your daughter or granddaughter how to sew, this can be a great way to start. That special girl in your life will be so proud to dress her doll in something she made herself.

Know of any other free 18 inch doll sewing patterns that should be on the list? Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the comments section to leave me a comment with the link. I will get it added ASAP.

Sew the Contemporary Wardrobe for 18-Inch Dolls - a great resource for those who love to sew for their American Girl Dolls!

Although this is not free, Sew the Contemporary Wardrobe for 18-Inch Dolls by Joan Hinds is a book I own and highly recommend. In fact, the fleece coat and mittens in the intro photo were made from a pattern in this book. It is great for getting started as it contains 35 patterns. If you want to create an entire wardrobe for your dolls, this is the book to get.

Fun to Knit Doll Clothes

This is another book I own. However, until I learn to knit and purl together properly, I can't make anything from it yet. Fun to Knit Doll Clothes first caught me eye because it has a pattern for a cute bathrobe. My daughters have been begging me to make them the cheerleader outfit! If you know how to knit, I would definitely recommend this book.

The Fun to Knit Doll Clothes book contains patterns for a skirt, long pants, shorts, hats, sweaters, and more. Includes a color photograph for each knitted doll outfit.

Did you know that American Girl Doll Scale is 1:3?

That means if a human sized item is 3 feet, the item in American Girl doll scale would be 1 foot.

Another fun craft to make for your American Girls is doll printables. My daughters just love to play kitchen with their dolls. Using doll printables is a great way to make inexpensive foods and groceries for your dolls. Typically you print these out on cardstock or glossy paper, cut them out, and then assemble using glue. Kids can make these with little or no supervision.

If your child loves to make paper crafts for her dolls, then be sure to check out the Doll Crafts book from American Girl. I highly recommend this book for a rainy day activity for moms and their daughters.

American Girl dolls are expensive, but wonderful toys; ones that your girls will want to keep for their daughters. Our kids grew out of that stage too soon to suite me and my wife.

      @anonymous: Hi Liz,

Why not post your patterns here at Squidoo? You could do a separate page for each one. Or you could look into starting a free blog at blogger.com. That's where I started and it's very user friendly. You don't have to know a whole lot of html or coding to get started.

Alternatively, if you really don't want to mess with any of that, I would be happy to post your patterns on my AG Doll Crafts blog, giving you credit of course.

If you have any questions, let me know. I would be happy to help.
