Fabric Yoyo Sewing Projects

Updated on January 11, 2017

I Love Fabric YoYos!

My Aunt Ruth had a yo yo quilt coverlet when I was a kid back in the 50s. I loved looking at all the different colors and prints of the fabric yoyos. I remembered the yo yo quilt as a hodge podge of mismatched material seemingly put together without rhyme or reason; it was a chaos of color!

So when a couple years ago I happened upon a small shoebox of vintage fabric yoyos. I was smitten all over again. Especially when I discovered there is now a TOOL to make these yoyos. :) On this page, I will be sharing a few of my own sewing projects using fabric yoyos as well as several found online.

Two Ways to Make Fabric YoYos

Make fabric yoyos for your sewing projects exactly like Heather Bailey shows here on her blog OR you can use these fabulous fabric yoyo makers by Clover. When I first started sewing yoyos I used Heather's method, but now I prefer the ease of these yoyo makers. Simple to use, inexpensive and they make PERFECT yoyos every time. Fast too! :)

Fiskars = Fine Sewing Equipment. I wouldn't sew without my Fiskars!

Joining YoYos

I've tried several ways to join yoyos so the connection would be strong and lay flat. Some of my attempts were a little unsightly. I really didn't know who to ask when I started sewing these because several years ago people didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I mentioned this craft.

So, yes, it took me a while to figure out the best way to join these yoyos, but here's how I do it now:

Insert threaded needle into center of one yoyo and out side edge. Back to back join yoyos with tiny overcast stitches at needle exit point.

This yoyo scarf is what I call BOHO YoYo; BOHO meaning bohemian. Sequins have been sprinkled here and there in the yoyo centers to added boho bling. Sewing projects like this one are super simple and fun too.

Fabric YoYo Table Runner

I LOVED making this table runner, but since completing it several years ago I've decided I prefer table runners and table scarves with an odd number of rows. It's more asthetically pleasing that way.

The great thing about this project though......I can easily add one more row to this fabric yoyo table runner. In fact I could add to the length and width and make it any size I like. Hmmmmmm :)

I was drawn in by your title, I guess I didn't know the name for fabric yo-yos but have seen them around for years and always thought they looked fun, especially with all the colors. I especially love your green tablecloth, it looks like an heirloom and maybe will be one some day! :)

Not yet. I have an old yo yo quilt of my grandmother's. I have loved it since I was a little girl. I have always been interested in making one but didn't know how to start. Thanks for the instructions.

I've never seen fabric yoyo's before, I might need to try some of these. I love the pillow, the sundress is neat also.
