How to use THE GIMP to make a Facebook Timeline Cover Art Banner
I love to make GIMP Tutorials! This GIMP Tutorial will show you how to create a Facebook Timeline Cover Art Banner using Gimp. If you would like to create an easy image cover art banner simply upload your image and adjust it to show the part of the image you would like to be seen at the top of your Facebook profile or Fan Page. If you would like to create a framed banner with elements which will fit on your profile or fan page then this page will show you how.
You will need to start a new GIMP image and set the dimensions to
Add Layers - You can use a screen shot or photo image.
With your new banner ready to add art, images, screenshots, and a message you are ready to begin.
Click on the "File" tab and select "open as layers" from the drop down menu.
Select the image you want added to your banner.
Adjust the image to where you would like it to be located. Align it with the grid to center or adjust.
You can add more layers.
The image example here is a screenshot of my company website header. I have used a snip it tool and then use the image from that screenshot as a layer on my banner.
Add Text - Add a message or your name
This is a banner created using a public domain image and added text. You can use any number of fonts and messages.
Make a decision about the font, size of the lettering, and what message you would like to add to your banner.
Start by clicking on the "A" on the GIMP tools image. The next dialog that opens will allow you to choose the font type, size, and color.
Create Borders Or Design Surprises - Sampler of the new Bible Verse series
The above image is a collage of three of the banners I made.
I have used the 'open as layers' command,
Then I use the rotating tool to angle each of three banners.
Then I moved them into position to create a unique design surprise.
After that I used the crop tool to even all the edges.
To create a border:
Even out all the edges of your images to the dimensions of the banner using the 'crop' tool. It looks like a knife on the tool dashboard.
If you have layers...
Make the background invisible.
Then merge all visible layers by hovering over the layer dialog and right click to find the option to "merge all layers"
Now make a copy of the merged layers (the duplication tool is at the bottom of the layer dialog box).
Your top layer will now be scaled down (to make it a bit smaller than the background layer).
Next use the paintbrush tool to paint the background layer. Which will create a border around your image.
Add A Bordered Banner Over A Photo
Creating a banner text is a layered text over the image.
Then duplicate the text layer and paint it solid. To create one background.
Next duplicate the solid colored strip and then resize it so it this a bit wider. (Notice the yellow section a bit wider than the white behind the text).
I used the art 'canvas' treatment on the yellow layer to create the look of a textured area. (the yellow strip is one section layered under the white strip).

Another Banner Example Layering JPG and PNG - Add the text on top and you have a delightful design.
This is a banner made by layering two images from Pixabay Public Domain Commercial License images. The top image layer is a .png image which makes it easy to layer because a .png often will have a transparent background.
Be sure to save your banner image in a .jpg so it will show up properly. A .png image with transparent background might show up as a black background in some cases.
