Updated on February 14, 2014

Polls about Fairy Tales

Do you like polls? Do you like fairy tales? Of course you do! Here are 50 short polls for my little social study project and your ultimate poll taking pleasure (and tons of easy points for members of Squidoo.

Who do you relate more? Who has more sympathies? What is more attractive to you? Who's side are you on? How do you like it? Well, let us find out together!

And don't forget... There is a bug which can log you out for taking polls too fast, especially if you use FireFox. So take your time or switch to Opera:)

Characters?

We don't have only people in fairy tales, there are also talking animals. They often perform in roles of magical helpers.

But don't confuse that with fables, where animals in many cases play the only roles - the stereotypical roles made only to personify specific human character.

We'll stay focused on fairy tales in this case!

If you really want to know more...

There are many books of fairy tales and many book about that subject, but this one is really special!

Giambattista Basile's The Tale of Tales, or Entertainment for Little Ones (Series in Fairy-Tale Studies)
Giambattista Basile's The Tale of Tales, or Entertainment for Little Ones (Series in Fairy-Tale Studies)

Here you will fin first written versions of Rapunzel, Cinderella, Puss in Boots and other famous stories, but written for adult audience and this is the book where brothers Grimm found the most of inspiration.

number three

King or queen?

See results

One interesting fact about fairy tales is look at main characters. There is widely known stereotype about male heroes being active and female characters being passive but when we look at top ten of most popular fairy tales we easily find tales with ladies in leading roles dominating.

It is hard to explain why. Maybe thanks to our society seeking for escape from reality? The fairy tale about the prince on white horse taking care of all our problems? Who knows?

Your fourth call

Wolf or raven?

The role of the animals

Animals in fairy tales have often a role of a helper. Wolf is probably the most ambivalent of all creatures in classic fairy tales. On one side it is a predator, destroying force, real danger, on the other we have many fairy tales where wolf can provide direct or indirect help to the hero.

Raven is another mythical animal. It is often associated with witchcraft. As one of the smartest animals raven can be a great helper too.

O.k., I have to help with this one...

Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barneville, Baroness d'Aulnoy and Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve were French writers in 17th century.

First coined the term 'contes de fees' (fairy tales) and second is the author of Beauty and the Beast.

More info

It seems we need more content in this section, so I will ad few more tips:

- read a lot, but be critical

- check my other articles about fairy tales, picture books and literature for kids

- develop your own opinion, because, frankly, you are the one who will benefit from the knowledge and you certainly need different kind of knowledge than anybody else

- be open for new stuff

- leave me a comment

These fairy tales are less known to wider audience, so it seems appropriate to present them a bit:

Thrushbeard is a story about a prince being rejected by a picky princess who decides to teach her a lesson and he succeeds. They marry and live happily ever after. This is a part of classic collection by brothers Grimm.

Swineheard is pretty similar story about a prince and picky princess, but in this case her lesson is even more painful and we don't have happily ever after ending. This kind of end is typical for Hans Christian Andersen.

Speak and be heard!

Are fairy tales for children only?

Sure they are!

Sure they are!

It depends on the fairy tale but I think of them more for children.

No way, they are for all open minded people!

No, even adults enjoy watching or reading fairy tales.

There's always more to fairy tales than meets the eye - when you read them as a child you enjoy the simple storyline, but as you get older you pick up on underlying messages.

They're for EVERYONE! The people who created these tales were trying to pass on the wisdom they'd learned in life to the next generation - that is everyone else - in a story form. Fairytales are great at any age, for that reason. And they're (nearly always) entertaining and well told.

No and if you read them carefully you will find they are full of darkness, treachery and excitement. Most of them hold morals and they all fascinate us. Some of the modern takes on them are more for children but most of them we should all be enjoying!

@goo2eyes lm: Squidoo polls are common problem in some browsers. I noticed I have a lot of problems with squidoo polls in Mozilla, but Opera works just fine (for me). Maybe you should try one of free browsers without add-ons and other fancy stuff too. There are tons of portable versions (you don't need instalation and you can work with your old browser without distraction) which can be used just for such sort of points giving lenses. Anyway thanks for your visit. All the best!

Interesting concepts for a lens. Will return later to finish the polls! Thanks for your comments on my Dessert Shooter lens.

The polls are a lot of fun, and introduced me to some new characters and fables.

I really enjoyed this lens and I think most people would. Are you planning to create a story? I look forward to reading it if that is the case. Very well deserved like!

I wish my kids were still little as I haven't watched or read a fairy tale in ages! Thanks for the fairy tale polls!

A ncely done set of polls, I like how you actually organized a long poll in categories with your black boxes.
