Fun August Activities for Kids Including Crafts and Games

Updated on July 21, 2014

Family Fun Month

Looking for August activities for kids? Find a nice selection of kids summer craft activities here along with fun family games.

In many areas, August tends to be the hottest month of the year and it just too hot at times to play outside. I know where I live, temperatures can get over 100 degrees, so I have learned it's a good idea to have some indoor activities planned for children.

Coincidentally, August is known as Family Fun Month, so here are activities that the whole family can participate in.

International Clown Week - Clown Craft

Clown Craft for Kids
Clown Craft for Kids

International Clown Week is celebrated the first week in August. Here's a colorful craft that most kids should enjoy making.

I love to combine crafts with games. Many kids love to play dress up games. To make this craft, use a quarter to make a pattern in various colors of construction paper. Colors like blue, green and brown can be used for the eyes. Black and red can be used for the nose and a variety of colors can be used for the hair. You'll also need to cut out a few mouths using red construction paper.

Next, cut out the middle of a paper plate that is white to use as the face of a clown. You'll be using the back side of the plate. Kids can now try out a variety of combinations to make the perfect clown face including hair. Please see the picture for one finished effect.

Once kids have found their favorite combination, have them glue their construction paper features onto the paper plate to create their perfect clown face. You can see a completed craft of this if you look at the image below.

This is more than just a coloring page. This is a craft within itself. Click on the image to be brought to the original source to print it out. It's free. After kids color it, you can decorate it further in a variety of ways.

Add some colorful glitter in the circles. In my case, I have some small silver stars I can add. Another option is to glue on small, flat colorful craft stones. Once the decorating is complete, cut out the image, glue it on to a piece of construction paper, (to make it sturdier,) and you're ready to pop it into a frame or use a magnet to put in on the fridge so everyone can admire it.

Clown Games

If you would like to play a simple clown game at home, you'll need a poster board. On the poster board draw a clown's face with eyes and mouth, but no nose.

Cut round circles out of red pieces of construction paper that can be used for a nose. Place a piece of tape on the back of each circle and one at a time, blindfld kids and let them pin the nose on the clown. Whoever comes closest wins!

If you prefer some online clown games, I have some for you below.

Kids can have some indoor fun by making up their own clown faces. The paint is water based so it will wash off easily. This will certainly bring a lot of creative enjoyment.

Friendship Week - How to Make a Friendship Bracelet

Friendship Bracelet Craft

Not only does August have monthly celebrations, it has weekly and daily celebrations as well. The third week of August is Friendship Week, with the first Sunday in August being Friendship Day and what better way to celebrate than to make a friendship bracelet.

There are many different ways to make a friendship bracelet. For this craft, I chose to make one using construction paper. I cut different colors of construction paper and rolled them up into a bead shapes and glued them together. Depending on the age of the child making this, he or she may need some help.

Once dried, kids can thread them onto a piece of yarn. Wrap this around the child's wrist and tie it off into a bow. If you wish to make this a simpler project, you can make the same thing just using beads.

Bracelet Kit

If you prefer a kit to make bracelets, here's a fun one for kids. It has a variety of colored beads as well as some alphabet beads. The stretch cords are in blue and pink, so this kit is good for both boys and girls.

Cat Craft - International Cat Day

August 8 is International Cat Day, so here's a fan craft for kids to make. Cut the head from a piece of construction paper in a circle shape making sure you cut the shape of the ears. Cut out the eyes and the nose. Glue them onto the face. Using a Sharpie or black pen, draw in the pupils and the mouth.

Next, cut some thin strips of white construction paper for the whiskers and glue them on. When dried, glue the face onto a Popsicle or craft stick. Kids now have a cat fan.

Bowling Craft - National Bowling Day

Kids Bowling Craft

August 8 is National Bowling Day. Here's another craft that also doubles as a game the whole family can play. Take 10 empty toilet paper rolls and make sure all paper is removed. Paint each one of them a different color. Remember, you can always mix the paints to create new colors. Once dry, line them up as the following:

Row 1-1 pin

Row 2- 2 pins

Row 3-3 pins

Row 4-4 pins

With a ball, roll it to knock down the pins. In a regular game of bowling, you get two tries per turn. Keep count as to how many pins each person knocks down. After 10 turns each, (or less if you prefer,) the person with the highest score wins.

If you wish to make this more challenging, you can number each pin 1-10 and count up the score of the pins knocked down each turn.

If you like bowling, but don't feel like making the craft, here's an alternative for you. This comes with 10 pins and two balls and it can be used indoors. It's also safe for young kids to use.

Airplane Craft - Aviation Day August 19

Airplane Craft
Airplane Craft

All you need for this craft is some craft sticks, paint brush, paint and glue. To begin, take four craft sticks and glue them together. This is for the body of the craft. Once the glue has dried, it's time to paint. Now, I happened to use three different colors of paint for this craft, but you can paint it anyway you want.

Next, take two sticks and color them for the wings. Take one more craft stick and cut off the ends on each side. This stick needs to be shorter as it's for the stabilizer in back. Paint it and when all paint is dried, it's time to assemble the plane.

Take the two matching sticks and towards the front of the plane, glue one on top of your set of four craft sticks and one on the bottom. Take your stabilizer stick and glue it on top of the plane in the back. Once the glue is dry, kids will have a plane to play with.

Airplane Games

Most kids love paper airplanes. They're easy to make and lots of fun to fly. Why not make some and play some games with them? You could have contest such as who can throw their paper arplane the highest or who can throw it the furthest.

Below I have a short video that shows how to make a paper airplane. I used this video to make the paper airplane you see in the picture above and it only took about two minutes to make. The directions are simple and you'll end up with some great planes. Be sure to watch for her trick at the end as to how to make them fly better.

How to Make a Paper Airplane

Dog Craft - National Dog Day

Dalmatian Craft
Dalmatian Craft

August 26 marks National Dog Day and there are many ways to celebrate. An easy craft to make is a dalmatian Frisbee. Take a paper plate and turn it over. This will only work if the back side of a paper plate is white.

Kids can use black paint to paint on spots to make the plate look like the coloring of a dalmatian. Once the paint is dried, your Frisbee is ready. What I really like about this craft is that the Frisbee can be played with indoors because if a paper plate hits something, the weight of the paper plate won't break anything.

In addition, older kids, even teens, can have fun with this. OK, truth be told, my husband and I had fun playing with this in the kitchen as I was writing this. See, fun for all ages!

Dog Games

Dog Clipart

Dogs are known for their keen sense of smell, so gather up all of your wanna pups, (kids,) for a game. Cut out pieces of construction paper to look like dog biscuits or if you happen to have a dog and have some real dog biscuits, take them and hide them.

You can pick a certain room to hide them in or choose to hide them all over the house. Kids can "sniff" them out in order to find them. I would suggest putting a time limit on the game such as five minute for one room or ten minutes for all over the house. The child that finds the most dog biscuits wins.

Another idea is to play a round of Hot Potato. You can do this with a dog biscuit, a dog toy or a stuffed dog animal. Have kids pass the object around while playing music. Each time the music stops, whoever had the object last is out of the game. To make the game easier to play, I have a music video below you can use.
