Graffiti Unrestricted Art

Updated on October 11, 2013

Is This Graffiti Or Art?

I love graffiti and think of it as an open creative expression from the artist as they share their view of the world that they live in.

I do believe that graffiti with a goal is art. I don't believe tagging your name or gang name everywhere is art.

I also think the artist is responsible for getting permission from the owner of the place they hope to paint. The artist is also responsible for their expression of art and should use wisdom in what and where they paint. I don't think it is good to paint something that totally offends the majority when in the public eye.

This mural was painted by Asheville artists Scott Allred and Jeremy Russell. I find it hard to believe it only took them 5 days to complete,

This mural was painted by The Asheville Mural Project, a group of artists brought together through the nonprofit Arts 2 People.

There is parking right here so convenient to the great shops and restaurants on Lexington Ave. You have missed out if you have never been here. Just saying.

My Hippie Graffiti Bedroom

This is my bedroom painted by a couple of talented friends, Julian Burke and Alan Zicarelli, in 1970. I was in the 10th grade at the time. Having experienced the 60's and 70's It is no wonder that I am a little mixed up.

@mrducksmrnot: Asheville is great. I like the diversity in the people. I'm just an old hippie from the 70's. I could walk around Lexington Ave all day and then go to the park for some evening music. I love when they gather for the drumming music. Thank you for the nice compliment.

Very familiar with the Asheville area and lot's of the artist. I've also noticed a lot of art/graffiti on Tractor trailor rigs in the form of advertisements. Great idea and looks better also but not so much as to distract from driving. Old buildings and bridges with the right art work help bring out the surrounding area when done right. Wonderful lens.

@anonymous: Thank you for vising and blessing. I would love to see the graffiti art in Israel. For now I will have to enjoy via the internet. I also am in awe of 3D Street Art. I love the ability to interact with the art and take photos.

Depending on the graffiti and where it's put, I believe it can be art.

Graffiti art can be beautiful, and as you said, the importance is having permission to create the mural or artwork (not just from the property owner but, I think, any neighborhood committee or commission). Philadelphia has a mural arts program that brings a lot of great mural artwork (similar to some of the "graffiti" art here) to the city walls and streets. Anyway, lots of really great art and photography showcased here!

This is a great question that has plagued the art world for years. Is outsider art just junk or art. Is it creative? Does it belong in a museum? Yes, sometimes.
